Jack Hughes has better defensive metrics than Kovalchuk would ever dream of. He had a bad game and has been bad in OT. His defensive game has been excellent considering the type of player he is. There are stars that don’t give a whiff about that side of the game (Ilya Kovalchuk).

Yeah, the giveaways once in a while suck, but they've happened way less during regular gameplay and Jack has shown a lot more willingness play a more defensive game. One game doesn't change that.

A giveaway once in a while is going to happen. When you carry the puck as much as him it's going to happen. But I'm noticing it way less this season.

I don't really give a shit about semantics and "are they a contender or aren't they". Literally every team that makes the playoffs is technically a contender for the Cup.

All that matters the rest of this year is that they need to stay healthy and they need to bring in some reinforcements at the deadline. That is literally it. They are almost locked into the 2-3 matchup.

Don’t even know what he’s talking about because they have gotten better than average goaltending and very much are a contender. In large part because of that! Turns out you can actually stay in games and amass points when you have your B, C, or even F game if you get saves. Wow!

Plenty of the crap we are seeing right now is coming from the core, the guys who have actually already been on this team for a while. So yes, what has happened in the past with those guys is a relevant gauge.

Secondly, no one here is claiming to be Nostradamus. We are fans on a message board, and all we can do is speak to our confidence in what this group can do. Could they prove themselves in way we haven't seen yet? Of course. Has what I've seen across several years now instilled confidence in that? No it hasn't.

Lastly, you can find a retort to every one of those examples. Vegas didn't exist before they went to the Final...that's nothing at all like having a core that you've already seen for a long time. Chicago is similar in that their core was not in place when they missed all those playoffs before tearing it up in the post-season. Florida...they didn't do shit until their core was shook up when they moved Hubie out in for Chuckie. The Avs similarly didn't do squat until they got rid of a major piece in Duchene...they may be the closest example of a core that really struggled before finally figuring it out but that's one.

Just to be clear Keefe wasn't shitting on those guys, he actually praised them but said they're there to set the table for the other lines, bring energy etc. He called out the top two lines and the D as well for terrible puck management and mentioned we don't look like a skilled team anymore.

I am not even sure what your point is. Even with his play "regressing", he still has 13 pts in the last 11 games IIRC.

Problem with the bottom 6 is that Cotter seems like the only player capable of creating scoring chances for a while now. Mercer has been invisible, Tatar and Haula are showing their age, Bastian and Lazar have been mediocre 4th liners. They can cobble together a decent 4th line with what they currently have but they need to make some additions and rework the 3rd line.
