Friedman: Gibson is interested in Carolina or Edmonton

I hope for Gibson's sake he gets traded to a contender. The man must feel like he's been trapped in purgatory for ages now.

He was unlucky. If he'd been a few years older and come along sooner, the Ducks might have won another Cup or two. But he was too young in '14 and '15, and by the time he came into his own as an impact goalie the cracks in the team were already showing; they were a good team being made to look better than it was in good part because of him. He was ultimately better than Freddie Andersen or Jonas Hiller, who both proved not quite good enough in the playoffs with stronger teams.

And the timing of his extension was awful, just as the team was about to fall apart completely. So he ended up locked into a long term deal at just the wrong time, with a high salary and long term that made him almost impossible to move for most of it.

Thankfully he's still young enough to potentially have a number of good years left. 31 is not ancient in goalie years. If his revival is legit, it's not crazy to think he could have another half decade in him.

I'm starting to wonder if this losing streak has made him lean towards Carolina...

Also, here's a little something for all the Skinner stans. So the Oilers are in a playoff spot but are one of the three worst teams for goaltending in the entire league... Is it making sense yet?

Ducks goalies both have been very good this year…. If not for them we’d be flirting with another top 3 pick.

If Philly had average goalie, they’d prob be a playoff team right now lol

I'm sure that after the first period tonight that PV's ask for Gibson just went up by at least an order of magnitude...with good reason.

Edmonton really has no tradeable assets to give though. If Savoie was being showcased tonight he failed at -4. Maybe Sam O'Reilly and a couple of 1sts would get it done. Verbeek can turn the screws as tightly as he wants to at this point.

I wonder how many "actual almost trades" were discussed by GMs involving this guy over the last 10 years. Every year his name comes up at the deadline. I wanted the caps to get him a few times. There had to be some close calls for him getting traded at one of these deadlines

Gibson has been an almost for years, but Verbeek keeps asking for too much in return.

Just a fun little update...

GSAx (minimum 20 Games):
Skinner - 39th (out of 49 goalies)
Gibson - 6th

GSAx per 60 (minimum 20 Games):
Skinner - 38th
Gibson - 3rd

Skinner has 14 games below an objectively bad .870 save percentage, for a total of 37% of his games. He's been under .800 for five games.
Gibson has had 5 games below an objectively bad .870 save percentage, for a total of 21% of his games.

Skinner has 17 games below .900 for a total of 45% of his games. So Skinner has been under .900 for almost half of his games this season...
Gibson has had 8 games below .900 for a total of 33% of his games.

So explain why his GSAx was still bad when they were playing good defense and even when they remained a top 5 team in the league in defensive metrics?

Read this article and have fun learning: Why the Oilers would be taking a significant gamble if they stick with their current goaltending tandem

Do you still believe the Oilers are playing good defense?

:sarcasm:

This really needs to be put to rest. Gibson is not going anywhere unless you satisfy Verbeek's over payment price! If Gibson was going to another team, it would have already happened and in previous years.

IMO, Colorado would make the most sense
To back up Blackwood?

Let's get back to reality here. I know Verbeek wants an overpayment, but this is ridiculous.

Not sure why you posted that. You realize the defense wasn't always this bad, right? I mean do you somehow think the defense playing like shit means Skinner still doesn't suck too? LOL. Seems to me like the pitchforks are coming out for the goaltending a lot more than they are for the D right now... It's sad that you still can't comprehend what the biggest problem on this team is. And also that you kind of seem happy that the team isn't playing well right now, which begs the question: are you that much of a simp for the goaltending?

EDIT:
Oh, and just an update...Skinner sits at 40th in GSAx...Gibson is 9th. Skinner is 39th in GSAx per 60. Gibson is 5th.

When you posted that you were looking through the rear view mirror.and quoting advanced stats without context.

My point was the Oilers defensive play was terrible despite what the metrics indicated and singling out the goaltending when the issues ran much deeper.

The goaltending was symptoms of the disease not the disease itself and getting a new goaltender wasn't going to improve the Oilers fortunes in any meaningful way.

NHL players will always pick apart a crappy defense and will eventually make a HOF goalie look average or an average goalie look like he doesn't belong in the NHL.

Except the team defense wasn't playing this poorly all season. The goaltending was. That's what the advanced metrics were telling us. If anything, these stats make a compelling argument that the disease itself started in net and eroded the confidence of the players in front. Now the defense can't protect the goaltending anymore and we're seeing both goalies exposed as the AHL tandem they actually are. The fact that you still can't see that shows how little you actually understand about something you seem so confident about.

It's quite a take to suggest the team doesn't need a new goalie, especially at this point. Continue to live in your little fantasy world, but you seem to strangely be a bigger fan of the goalies than the team itself...
