Friedman: Gibson is interested in Carolina or Edmonton

People don’t want to sign/re-sign in Anaheim because they want to win. Making the team worse by trading Gibson for peanuts doesn’t make us more likely to win, so it’s actually making it less likely decent players will sign. It’s not like they’ll be saying “I can sign in Anaheim for an overpayment and a restrictive NTC/NMC, because I know that then Anaheim will trade me where I want to actually go!”.

Free agents don’t re-sign with crappy teams because they are crappy teams with low-to-zero Cup chances, not because they won’t trade their NTC players for a loss when they want out.
Don’t think gibson makes us a cup contender…. And were not going to be cup contenders by end of his contract.

He’s got value right now…. Def could be time to look that way(or draft)

This would be fine and honorable for Verbeek to do if Gibson wants out. However, there has to be a line drawn where Gibson needs to understand it’s not happening unless certain criteria is met. Even though I don’t necessarily agree, giving him up for a blah return is one thing. But trading him simply to honor his request if it costs them assets or a retention slot or anything else negative for them, makes completely no sense for them to do. Gibson is a big boy and makes a hefty paycheck so if the market isn’t interested in him without it costing the Ducks then he needs to pull up his big boy pants and continue playing like he has value so that a trade can eventually happen for him.
I agree. All I'm saying is I'm not sure if Verbeek gets an underwhelming yet somewhat palatable offer from an interested he may bite on it as a sign of appreciation to gibson.

It’s a tough call. Doing right by the player sometimes is the honorable move. But I’m not so sure they really owe him at this point. I was a big Gibson fan for quite awhile, even when he started falling off. But the more he started displaying negative body language and showing his frustrations by seemingly giving up, the less I appreciated him as a fan. I still love Gibby but feel like he’s “made his bed” in a sense and therefore needs to continue to improve his worth to get him back to a respectable value. He’s been brutalized by the Ducks’ ineptness the past few years but giving up on them isn’t the professional way to react, especially when he’s been getting paid so well. Tough call on the honorable thing to do part.

I think a "lateral" trade to do him a favor is one thing. A trade to do him a favor while getting zero benefit in return, OTOH, is not something they owe him.

Gibson DOES make the team win more, which gets the team a chance to get closer to/into the playoffs, which DOES improve the chances of free agents wanting to actually sign in Anaheim. Picks which are statistically unlikely to ever be NHL players, and who best case scenario won’t be in the NHL for 3-5 years, not so much. I think you’re trying to argue that those picks can be flipped for trade purposes, but I’m not convinced that Verbeek still isn’t the new guy being taken advantage of on every trade, and don’t see him actually replacing what Gibson is currently bringing to the team.

Man if Edmonton doesn't make a move for goaltending in the next few weeks they don't get out of round 1. Esp with the Avalanche possible first round match up....
