Daily reminder that the Oilers could have Johnston right now but their head scout ignored the guys in the org who were pushing for him. Pretty sure he'd be doing okay out there with McDavid or Draisaitl.

Hyman's good.

RNH turns into a ghost every playoffs.

Perry and Kane are both done. Perry's like 80 and Kane hasn't had a shot since his wrist injury.
RNH is almost a PPG for his playoff career. He’s just useless offensively when he has to center his own line.

This is the first time we've seen Knob ride McDrai like this honestly all season. They were vibing tonight though.

Oilers have some support for these guys including Bouch, Ekholm, Hyman, and several other role players like Kane and RNH. Team would benefit from another top 4 D, more consistent goaltending, and a couple more solid options in the bottom 6... But they're not nearly as McDrai riding as they have been previously.

Oh and if somehow Ceci and Nurse could find their mojo again, that would be great...

Teams always play to maximize the roster they have. If playing McDrai 25+ minutes a night leads to playoff wins, then that's a defensible strategy.

The bigger issue is if that leads to either of McDavid or Draisaitl getting worn down to the point where they get injured or can't perform at a high enough level to drag their team to victory.
They're both already injured which I think is why they're together now to compensate. Henrique is injured as well so that's 2/3rds of the former top line that isn't 100%.

They were definitely a 1 line team tonight but it worked, they were in on every goal.

If they can play 25-30 mins then you get a saw off or close too it in the other mins it's not the worst strategy, so long as they can maintain it all playoffs long.
That 5-man unit simply dominated the canucks last game. That's just going to happen sometimes playing against those calibre of players.

But it's totally unacceptable that Vancouver couldn't get more going against the Oilers' other lines. That's the whole point of having the offense so spread-out; take advantage of the matchups if Edmonton chooses to go top-heavy. Kane and Nuge are good players, but definitely more sedondary pieces and not line-drivers.

I'm curious to see what both teams do line-wise next game, now that Edmonton gets final change.

Guess Hyman doesn’t count
Hyman is a phenomenal complementary player, but he's not even a 30 goal scorer without McDavid. They just have great chemistry, Hymans IQ and work ethic allows him to strive with the greatest playmaker of this generation. It takes talent/hard work to be able to play with a guy like McDavid so not taking that away from him.

No team can make the playoffs with two great players. We know this because the Oilers bombed in the regular season for years while McDavid and Draisaitl were killing it. The team around them is great. Imo getting Ekholm was the final core piece, although maybe we need to fix goaltending (again)

Last night was a strategic decision. Conventional wisdom is that you spread the talent but instead we concentrated it. Just about any team will seem shallow if they would do that.

They need killer netminding or at least solid netminding. Your starting netminder should NOT be Sub-900, this isn't the early 90's and the Oil doesn't have a killer blueline.

Outside of that, the team rolls but sometimes it needs a kick in the butt. Mc D and the other letter holders need to lead more than just his skills if he's wearing the C. The Oil has roster players who can be heroes on any night, if folks like Mc D are pushing morale hard on the group, it'll elevate everyone's game and they need everyone on deck if they expect to win it all.

So far, the Oilers have proven that they're willing to go toe-to-toe with their opponent. I like that kind of ethic.

Playing McDrai 25+ mins a game in the playoffs might be viable but you'd better make sure you win the series quickly.

Since 2019-2020 Nuge has 11 goals and 44 points in 43 games while being the teams main pk'er up front. He has 9 points in 7 games this year and has not been on for one GA on the pk. Not bad for a ghost.
