International: German Junior National Teams

Schäfer hasn't been in the lineup yesterday so he might already be on his way to Canada to join his teammates. Otherwise he wouldn't have been nominated I think.
Totally agree with you on Händel: If he'd be injured it would be a major downgrade.

I'm inclined to think Berlin will wait until the finals are over.

I initially thought they'd just send him off with the team, but if they kept him around this long, then I think he stays the whole time. His appearance in Game 2 was a bit of a surprise for me, I must say.

I still think that in their mind's eye, Schäfer gains more important experience by being part of these finals, even as a healthy scratch, and they'd like to keep him around, even if it's not the best thing for the U18 squad.

Apparently the boys lost their second pre tournament game, too: 3-6 against Norway. Doesn't look promising so far.

This is the official roster on the IIHF website, and both Händel and Schäfer are included.

Hopefully, Händel has only needed rest and Schäfer will be added no later than with the conclusion of the DEL finals (go Berlin!).

If the latter is the case though, Schäfer may not actually play until the quarterfinals/relegation.

I’d guess he’s already on his way to Frisco, that's why he wasn't in the line up in game 3. To me, it seems like Berlin wanted to keep him as long as possible before releasing him shortly before the tournament starts. Like I mentioned in a previous post, I can’t imagine Berlin would prevent him from playing at the U18s, especially knowing how important this tournament is for a player his age who’s hoping to get drafted — even though I understand that the DEL playoffs are important, too. Schäfer just isn’t that essential to their lineup. If he were as good as Tim Stützle was at that age, it might be a different story.

But like I said, that’s just my take on the whole situation.

I know that in the end it all comes down to the result, but that doesn’t sound too bad. I’m not sure how strong Canada is this year, especially with a lot of their top players probably still in the playoffs. Yesterday, they got clapped by Sweden 8–3.

I don't know what surprised me more, the win against Czechia or the selection of Hempel as the best player for Germany.
He must have made all his great plays just when I was blinking or looking away from the screen.
