That sounds like Larry reading tea leaves and not something Lundqvist put out there. I mean, it makes sense that Henrik thought he'd have a better chance being a #2 in DC behind a 23 year old then behind a three headed abomination in NY. Can you blame the guy? Not only is he not a backup, he's the SECOND backup. It made zero sense. The whole situation was just dumb.

But, my point really wasn't to talk about Lundqvist, etc... More about what made more sense for the Rangers.

And, here we are. Georgiev had a shit season, got in a tussle with ADA who was permabanned (but, believe me, teams will look at that negatively or at the very least with due diligence) and now has requested a trade which will result in the Rangers getting next to nothing out of the deal.

What did it accomplish? You ended up paying big buyout money to Hank, signing Georgiev to multi-million dollar deal, paying Shesterkin, paying Kinkaid, etc... and now you've got another year of Hank on the books and a disgruntled head case who had a crap year. Would've been better off just letting Hank ride of into the sunset, trading Georgiev for higher value, and the cap hit(s) would've been largely the same except you might've actually gotten a 2nd or 3rd for Georgiev instead of now a team doing you a favor by taking him off your hands. It was bad management.

Dude, history has shown you're on the wrong side of this. "Done' Hank was signed shortly after becoming a UFA by a Stanley Cup contender and Georgiev, whatever his value was a year+ ago, is going to get you a warm bag of manure at this point.

It was dumb then and it's more dumb now and that's strictly from an asset management point of view without any warm fuzzy Lundqvist feelings. They blew it and made the situation as convoluted as possible. This isn't about Lundqvist. It's about Georgiev and another asset turned into cow dung.
 
Taking a stab at his value. Geo is 25 years old. Is 6 games away from his 100 NHL game. He's an RFA, on a contract that expires in 2022/23. He is a legitimate Backup netminder who can challenge for the #1 goaltender position. A 1b if you will.

As a draft pick - 3rd or a 4th rounder
As a Roster player - 3rd or 4th line grinder, enforcer, or complimentary goal scoring winger.
As a Prospect - B level Prospect.

Andrew Mangiapane RW $2,425,000 RFA 2021

The why- For the NY Rangers, the Buchnevich trade leaves them light at the RW position. Mangiapane gives them some flexibility there. He's a lefty shot, but also plays the right side. He doesnt fit the bill for the new NYR mantra "we want to be tough to play against", but the other additions should pick up the slack in that department. Mangiapane should be able to give the NYR a 20 goal scorer on the Right side.
For Calgary, they have a few younger goalies likely not ready for the jump. Geo can slide in right behind Jacob Markstrom. Gives them real solid 1,2 between the pipes.

Jesse Puljularvi RW $1,175,000 RFA in 2022/23

The why- For the NY Rangers Puljujarvi gives them a 6'4 big bodied winger who can fly. He started to put it together last year after a very dissapointing start in an Edmonton Oilers sweater. Change of scenery for Jesse adds another Countryman for Kakko for some familiarity.
For the Edmonton Oilers, they currently have 2 netminders signed. Thier respective ages combine at 72 years old. Koskinen is 33, Mike Smith is 39. Geo can challenge for the #1 spot over there.

To The Boston Bruins for
Craig Smith $3,100,000 UFA in 2023/24

The why- For the NY Rangers they are a club that is looking to develop more of a North/South game. Smith is that guy. He also adds veteran leader ship to a young squad, and a player who can play the RW position as well as Center. Lastly, Smith made his way onto the Bruins top 6 last year. He would be a good candidate to compete with Kakko, Kravtsov and Blais to get up into the NYR top 6, but would also be player that certainly wouldn't hurt you in a bottom 6 role. He's a player who reached 20 goal mark 5 times in his NHL career.
For the B's, they are a team that is going into their final seasons to make a legitimate run. Rask is out for 6 months, and is also UFA. So the B;'s made a move and signed Linus Ulmark as their starting netminder. They are literally 1mil under the cap, so they free up some small room $675,000.

Edmonton is the only one of these teams I could see trading for a goalie.

Georgiev’s value was never that high.

As far the warm and bias feelings towards Hank, he was bought out b/c he was done and Washington signing him doesn’t mean he wasn’t. He couldn’t string together solid performances for a long while and sadly sat the bench while kids, including Georgiev who you questioned relentlessly, dressed around him.

Hank is still done and Georgiev still has little value. We all should know this by the Cam Talbot return. That doesn’t mean Georgiev cannot have a Cam Talbot career though.

I wanted to trade Georgiev last year because I was afraid that, being the backup and having a small sample of games, that he could really see his value tank. Can't imagine he commands that much value at the point, but I honestly don't ever understand the market for goalies.

I don't want to have to pay for the 50% retained on those two. While lovely, realistically, that will cost us way more. I'm not sure an extended Zibs would get us both Chychrun and Keller, let alone both with salary retained. Don't get me wrong, he's worth both but I just don't think that sort of deal would realistically happen. We're dealing with Bill Armstrong here. Not Don Waddell.

Or at the very least, he just wants a chance to win some playing time. Shestyorkin is an elite goalie. Georgiev is a dead man walking here.

I was speculating that Tony may have had some friends in the room that would make an occasional joke when Georgie let up a lot of goals. It isn't like Shesty stopped him from playing. His bad play stopped him from playing more. Shesty only started 31 of the 56 games.
