OT: General OT Thread #44 - Hat Talk 2025

Ahhh... Dark mode is back and with the option to collapse the sidebar again!
I love that dark mode is back, but the spacing is all weird on the thread listing pages on PC. It annoys me enough to actually voluntarily switch back to light mode.

The best Mustard i've ever had is a Hot Pepper Mustard made by a woman in SLP. My wife took a course with her in canning and brought some home. I'm now addicted.

The player who scored the OT goal did this, and the other team didn't like it very much. Bench-clearing brawl ensued.

I remember back in the day when you could start building a rink in late October, and the ice would be awesome all the way through late February/early March. And there would be 2-3 foot walls of snow all the way around it, and it stayed that way till spring.

Winters suck now!

It's almost like the climate is... changing.

I know you said you didn't want to open that can of worms here, but...

For the record, I am not a climate change denier, and absolutely believe climate change is not only happening, but will probably pass the point where we can reverse it because we're dumb animals who want our treats and can stop eating until after we've burst.

That said, global warming is a global phenomena, and variations within regions over the short-term are not necessarily caused by that greater context. The winters here may have changed due to global warming, or we may just be in a warmer period in Minnesota over the last decade, or we may be remembering the best winters and forgetting the worst from our childhoods (which was also a short period and not indicative of long-term trends, even if we aren't misremembering). Global warming is a measure of 1-2 (very important) degrees Fahrenheidt, not 10-20, so the large variance of winter ice and snow in Minnesota is likely not caused by global warming but instead naturally occuring regional warming.

Did you know that Pieter Bruegel's painting "Hunters in the Snow" was one of the first paintings that had Holland depicted as covered in snow? That's because it used to be warm enough that it didn't snow in Holland. The painting is from 1565, and the change was not due to man-made global cooling, but instead the "Little Ice Age" of Northern Europe. Why do I bring this up? Because it's helps to illustrate that regions do go through warming and cooling that aren't caused by man, and that changes in local weather are all but guaranteed over the course of time.

It is, however, also important to understand the reasons for warming and cooling, so we can determine if those changes will kill us, and if they can be reversed. I mean, that's assuming we don't want to turn Earth into New Venus.

*ahem*

But putting all that shit aside, I also hate that these winters have been so unpredicitible. I'm trying to find the time to teach my daughter how to skate and it's been hell even to find ice. Annoying.

So, short version is that the climate has always changed.

Still doesn't mean that we should spew toxic chemicals and assorted shit into the air, water, and earth... just common sense. You don't shit where you eat.

I view it in VERY simple statistics:

Let’s say climate change being real, accurate, whatever wording you want to use, is 50/50. Either it’s real or it’s not.

Do you really want to bank on making the earth uninhabitable for humans in that 50% chance it’s not real?

What’s the downside to taking it seriously? Companies, especially Oil companies, won’t be as profitable? Cry me a river.

I’m 2022 alone, they received 727 BILLION, that’s billion with a B, in subsidies.

I hope it's clear that I am not refuting man-made climate change. I 100% agree with your post.

Yup. I'm no expert, but looking at climate through the ages is fascinating. There were definitely warmer, and colder eras during the past 5,000 years or so. Also, natural and man made ecological disasters long before the present, i.e. Greenland, Easter Island, and lands scattered throughout the world where animals and plants were introduced that destroyed the local flora and fauna, nvm falling object and seismic incidents.
