When I was in california it was pretty much 2 layer weather, wear a shirt and then a second layer or hoodie. And it was largely 60 or so every day. Except for the morning and nights which were a bit chilly.

Then going back to DC it's 30, 40 and this week it's in the teens lol

Thats not all California. Just where the heathens live (south of San Luis Obispo & Bakersfield).

Those north of that, are cold and wet. Lots of rain. And temps around freezing at night.

So it’s an interesting mix

I keep both my kitchen window and bedroom window open about 3 inches in the winter cause the heat really rises being on the top floor of three level condos still will rarely drop below 63. Would be different if I had windows on the opposite side but I don't they are all only east facing. Starting to get a little over it with all the truly glorious coldness in the DC area.

Hope your Mom is doing ok. I'm sure you are like me once parents get to the age of 'you'll get that call any time'. Not sure, for me, if this is a good thing or not.

It’s so exhausting. Dad never made it to 70, but the rest of the four parents (yay divorce! ) are in their ‘70s, stepdad needs a kidney, and MIL is 87 with Alzheimer’s. I love them all, but man…

The older we get the harder they are to take care of. The children have become the guardians....it's tough and so many of my friends are dealing with it.

I have sadly lost both of my parents. 30 years apart. Both went fast and i am thankful for that. Can’t imagine a long drawn out process with those who raised you. I will have to do that with my parents and winter is coming. So hard.

My Mom died suddenly 16 months ago (Dad slowly in 2014), and I'm still dealing with the Estate. (Also still dealing with mental health impacts, but that's another story.) Took almost a year just to get the house emptied.

I'll preach to anyone who will listen - if your parents are getting up there in age, have yet to 'downsize', have yet to clear out old records/boxes/dishes/clothes/jewelry/crap, harass them to do it, get proactive and help do it, before their kids have to. It sucks.

I'm fortunate in that my mom hasn't lived in one house for my whole life or anything and is a chronic thrower-awayer. So much so that she once cavalierly threw an envelope away... that had her tax refund check in it. But dealing now with convincing her that figuring out long-term care is not a choice between leaving something for her kids or not; it's a choice between bankrupting her kids or not. And yeah, the accumulated stuff can be daunting. Glad you got it done. Take care of you.

My friend was on a plane three planes behind them on approach coming home from New York. Said they heard the noise of the collision but couldn’t see anything from their vantage point and then the captain came on the mic and said they were being diverted to Dulles due to an incident at DCA.

Unbelievably sad. They were 200 feet from the runway. Just crushing for the families.

Unfortunately my wife’s former student, her sister (both figure skaters) and we think, their parents were on the flight. My wife is crushed this morning. Waiting to hear more news.

It can all be gone in a matter of seconds….

My daughter is a figure skater. She knew several people on that plane. We found out early this morning when she was at a private lesson and they pulled the coaches and skaters. She had to hear it all first hand. Our house is a mess today.
