Or teams realized the dilemma Lou was faced with. Decided not to trade with the Devils and gamble on Urbom falling to them.
Guess the Caps gamble paid off.
That makes no sense since seventeen teams didn't even bother putting in a claim. The irony is I'd probably be laughing this off if it was Calgary that claimed him...it'd be whatevs, good luck kid but since it's a division rival with a coach who's had him before it stings a bit more.
I think it's also important to reflect on what we discussed here prior to Urbom being waived. Many suggested that other, similar and even better players, passed through waivers unclaimed. Hence, some concluded that it was a gimme that Urbom would be claimed.
I imagine that those very same people would be tooting their horn stating "see! told you he wasn't anything special!" had he passed through waivers.
Now I think it's time to eat an appetizer sized helping of crow, and at least admit that you didn't assess his value properly.
The very fact that he was claimed over some others is a testament to his value.

not really.
he makes nothing. most veteran guys that go on waivers either make a high salary or are not very good. this was the latter.

lol god you are stubborn. You were one of the ones screaming he'd never be claimed and you can't even admit you were wrong about it.
It makes sense to me that those lesser teams wouldn't take the jump. A contending team claiming Urbom makes more sense to me because they'll have the luxury to keep him as a 7th guy and not lose him. They still thought enough of him to give him that shot.
Given the fact that other guys made it through I wouldn't attribute much credence to the whole "if you don't get claimed by bad teams you're not so valuable" argument.
The fact that he was claimed means very little in terms of his value. It just means another team wants to see what he is before he's sent to the minors.
I mean, I can point out to the fact that he was waived and say he was essentially a give-away... value-less.
If he had enough value to be traded.. he would have been traded. Unfortunately, he didn't. So we had to waive him.
He's not a nothing prospect. He's a big guy who can skate and move the puck and is decent defensively. For a defensemen that's a terrific combination of skills. Is he ever going to be more than a complementary defenseman? Probably not. But he's still got second pairing upside.I never once was screaming that he'd never be claimed. I thought he wouldn't, sure.
sure, I was wrong. he got claimed. big deal, doesnt change the fact that he is a nothing prospect.
No priority.. but the Devils are the only team who can send him to the minors without waiving him again.
So if the Devils really want him back, all they have to do is put in a claim on him every time he is waived. Either they will lose him to a different team or they will get him back. If no-one else claims him, they can send him straight down. If someone else does claim him, he's stuck in the NHL.
Well that's also a great point too. The Capitals could be taking a shot in the dark here. But can you acknowledge, that of all the other guys waived, the Capitals felt that "this guy" was worth a spot and not any of the others? Doesn't that essentially speak to his value to the Capitals?
I'm not going to lose sleep over this but it pisses me off that we have no-talent dusters like Harrold and Volchenkov in the lineup while Mark Fayne is sitting in the press box and Alex Urbom is on waivers.
You spend years cultivating a prospect, and when he's finally ready you lose him for free so that Peter Harrold can lose us more games with his atrocious defensive play and non-existent decision making skills. ****ing stupid.
The two are not mutually exclusive. Just because you get put on waivers by a team it doesn't mean that you're bad at hockey.
