Prospect Info: General Discussion of Prospects

SHL play-in rounds underway, Von Barnekow vs. Sjodin in one series (Malmo vs. Rogle). I doubt they make offers to either, just mentioning they are moving to playoff hockey.
 
Seems like a few teams are signing drafted players to ELCs lately.

Who, if any, of the Sabres prospects are expected to sign this Spring?

I would get Leenders under contract based on his OHL body of work however... the multi-headed net monster is afoot.

I'd give Marjala and Leinonen both strong maybes.

Re. Marjala - playmaking creativity is something they could use developmentally on the farm and Marjala could be someone who say takes Rousek's place (though the speed difference is going to be something lacking as Rousek is still one of the quickest Amerks). Marjala has done good things for two years now in Liiga against men. There is probably a player there, though I don't know if he could reach a Maccelli type level, he could be a serviceable mid-line for the AHL team for a few years who maybe turns into something more.

Leinonen would be an interesting case as he's Mora's #1 in the Qualification Round winning both games in OT over Vasteras IK. They're up against Djurgarden in the next round, lost game 1 in OT, then they lost 3-1 with the third goal being an empty netter. He's been very, very good in all of them so far IMO (watched a little of a couple of them, looked in on the highlights). It poses a question though as to the development role since they already have Ratzlaff signed and I think they should sign Leenders, meaning after a long, long time without doing so, they'd have goalies from three straight drafts on a deal. That doesn't mean that they can't leave one of these guys - like Leinonen - in another pro league to work on his game. But when it comes to goaltending development, I have my questions about what the Sabres do and don't do about them with how they've botched Levi and mishandled Ullmark and Luukkonen IMO.

I think they can and should leave their collegiate defensemen for one more year at least though I can see them thinking Strbak might be ready as the 1D on the #1 team in the NCAA right now. McCarthy, Geary, Kleber should all continue working on their craft IMO.

As for forwards... Miedema started well but eh. Maybe they sign Costantini or Sardarian though that is likely putting each up against Marjala and the other two to see who of the slightly built offensively creative players they think they can do something (or anything) with. I would leave Sardarian, Richard, Ziemer, and Zelenov at least one more year. There are too many guys still in Rochester to shove that many in, especially when PP and offensive cycles are still going to guys like Ostlund, Wahlberg, Helenius, and Neuchev in front of 'em. (I left out Rosen, I think he's either up or traded next year.)

I would pass on Panocha.

This guy, Gleb Veremyev, is another one who plays center some and has size on his side: Gleb Veremyev at eliteprospects.com He is only a sophomore though.

TJ Hughes (no relation to the Hughes brothers or even to the OTHER Jack Hughes) works his sack off for the Wolverines but he's sub 6' and under 190 lbs so I wonder how long that style works as a pro. But I like the ignition. T.J. Hughes at eliteprospects.com He is also only a sophomore.

There aren't a lot of high-end UDFA in the NCAA any more. It's pretty well scouted and picked through but in terms of organizational depth, high-work rate, tenacious players and particularly right shot (and right shot defensive defensemen) would be places to look.

Sounds like Veremyev is likely signing this spring with the Islanders. Toronto signed John Prokop (LHD) and he's joined the Marlies.

You can sign players starting march 1 for next yr contracts

Focus on--23 CHL drafted signings, 20-22 college drafted signings, and 21 euro drafted


23 draft the signed benson and Wahlberg

They signed Ratzlaff before he went back to CHL

Sardarian ( michigan tech) has one more yr of college eligibility and could go the declare pro and must sign by june 1/30 days

Poltapov -- who knows

Richard ( UConn)' since he delayed college a yr he can do the college june 1/30 day in 2026.

Miedema could be signed after his season ends.

Costantini ( western michigan/JR sabre) is in his SR year so his rights is thru aug 15.

Huglen ( Univ of minn) -- sr yr. His signing rights till aug 15. Dont expect him signed

If like them to sign Strbak ( michigan st) after NCAA season and have him do a yr in AHL
 
Leenders beaten, puck off the middle bar in the back of the net, but it isn't seen by the officials and isn't challenged. Game is still 1-0 Bulldogs instead of tied.
 
Miedema makes a play from behind the Brantford net, gets hit, his linemates wind up jousting beside the net in a scrum and he's too busy lobbying the ref for a penalty. Not enjoying him tonight.

Edit - Leenders finishes with his first "shutout" of the season. If they don't see it and don't call it, it's not a goal against.

Well he's done for the season so it seems more likely that it would be something later in the summer if he decides he wants to play. I've read he is in some constant level of pain from his back that he has to manage.

Honestly, living in MN, I watch a ton of college hockey. I am not sure if Huglen even wants to play pro hockey. His body has been through it and I could see him retiring or taking an AHL deal for a year or two.
