He's a rather sober and reflective interview subject, which is why it sort of irritates me that he/Sportsnet feel he has to put on a red nose and a clown costume every time he goes on television. It's neither needed, nor authentic Gene. It's a persona, and a buffoonish one at that. Be yourself, man.

It's not a comment on his character. More on him being about as funny as Will Farrell was in The Office and adding zero insight into the game.

His role isn’t to provide insight to the game. He’s the host of the broadcast. All RSN (rogers Sportsnet) broadcasts had someone like him at one point in the 2000s. Gene is still doing his work because he likes Edmonton and the community and we love him.
