GDT: GDT #78 New York Islanders vs New York Rangers | April 10th | 7:30 PM | F/L 9-2

People souring on Roy. What we are seeing is a frustrated, competitive coach who wants to win. He’s working with little talent, and players who don’t fit his aggressive system. He has a personality that may rub a few wrong, he makes decisions that may rub a few wrong—this is compounded by a buildup of frustration. I’d like to see what he could do with more talent, or, a rebuilding club. His best coaching was in Jrs.

Good thing Lou didn't move Palmieri and Pageau at the deadline, otherwise we might have lost 10-2.

This was a doozy.

It's been a killer that we've spent good chunks of two seasons now with no legitimate back-up goaltender.

That has to change.

Dunno what's been up with Varlamov but even if he would be back (still has a contract), the liklihood is that it'd only be a matter of time before he's out again is very high.

The whole bit with Hogberg out, Lennox in, two shots, then Lennox out...

Felt more than amateurish.

It was clear that Lennox can't play at this level (yet). He's hardly played whatsoever the past two seasons. Don't know what was achieved. We knew after the first period that Hogberg can't stop these guys. At no point did that change.

I didn't look at the line before the game but I believe W Mich was the higher ranked team and outplayed DU pretty handily in that game. DU's goalie (Davis) kept them in it.

Indeed!

WMU's ranking in the conference surprised me.

But then they were the dominant team.

If it weren't for Davis, they could have easily been up 5-0 after the first 2 periods.

I was a bit surprised how hard a time Denver had with everything. They struggled.

Better decisions with the puck and WMU could have been really dangerous.

Next question...

Does Roy actually have the gall to leave Boqvist, Perunovich, and Reilly out of the line-up on Saturday?

It's not just the stats from guys like Pelech and Pulock and Romanov - they looked burned out a bit, even if Pelech has decided to just simply be everywhere on the ice (although not in the spot he should be enough).

It'd be quite the slap in the face of these other guys to leave them sitting around after this performance.

  1. They don't have anything.
  2. Even if they did no sense in harming their development by putting them out there with this downtrodden crew.

Bridgeport was absolutely trash this year but seeing what Jeffries has and if Bolduc improved any is fine. I'm sure they would be stoked to get called up and play.

I still struggle to understand why all of these defenseman were taken out of the lineup when they clearly played better without their actual roster players in.

as for Roy...

I can understand wanting to pull Hogs after 6 goals...I also accept his explanation and taking responsibility for a poor initial decision.

Pride....nothing to see here other that Roy probably wanted to agree and instead took the positive....something he has been doing for a while till he absolutely losses it....which i think he almost was going to do there.

Look, i have some reservations about Roy, as much as i like him. However, there are great coaches that with a team like ours, have and would have looked like utter crap. Roy deserves...ok, maybe deserves is a touch too strong, but i believe he is a solid coach that definitely should be given a year or two to mold our team, maybe three....without Lou!

He has proven to be an able teacher, now he just needs teachable students....some with the ability to use their brains....that have a desire to actually play, instead of just get paid...oh, and with some bloody talent!

If we don't clean house it will be another long year next year with the fanbase completely disinterested and UBS empty. Season ticket holders and going to start bailing at a record pace.

Last night’s game doesn’t mean much in the scheme of things but veterans, of all people, should at least show some heart.

Here are the worst +/- players from last night.
Horvat -5
Lee -5
Pelech -5
Pulock -4
Palmieri -4

For all you Mayfield haters out there he was a team best 0 on this stat.

It’s just one game I know, but after Lou was forced to trade Nelson (Yes, forced by the player himself) how he didn’t trade Palmieri is unfathomable.

There are very few players that continue to perform at a high level at age 35 and beyond. Of that small group of players, many of them are stars or superstars. That’s not Palmieri. I’ll go further and say that many players at that age see their performance levels fall off a cliff.

Caveat emptor.

I cant think of anything that would get me to get ST -- perhaps if they were free -- along with free parking...
and $100/game voucher for alcohol.

Maybe then, Id still have to split it......

Isn’t the job of a coach, or a good coach, to take the players he has and use their strengths to create a good team? Exhibit A - Barry Trotz. Roy seems like he’s constantly trying to put square pegs in round holes. Admittedly the talent level on the team is low, but a coach should get better out of this team than a 9-2 demolition by a hated rival, never mind the other 3 blowouts this season.

Bottom line, Roy sucks. He doesn’t need more years to implement his system. He’s the coach, not the GM. A good coach knows how to get the best out of what he’s got. Roy has not done that.

I completely disagree. I think NYI fail because they can't sustain the max effort they very often put out. No players can in the NHL. But Roy gets frantic, so Adam Pelech is now running around like he's a rookie. And if he's going to take out Lennox after one goal, my read is that he cannot cope with his own terrible judgment in making the move to begin with.

Yes, Islanders need better talent. But I see a coach who doesn't have the talent & is responding by flailing. I don't think that talent is going to change fast enough for this flailing not to occur next year. Better to move on now.

I’m a Roy fan which is hard to admit after last night’s performance but I’m not here to debate that or defend him.

Here’s the more important topic. This team is lacking in high end talent. The contributors from the ECF final teams of a few years ago are all older and less productive. One of them, Nelson, is gone. The only addition of significance is Holmstrom who looks like he may be a solid middle six player, but he certainly is not a game changer. Meanwhile, we congratulate ourselves over feel good stories like Gatcomb and waiver wire pick ups for a # 6/7 Dman. That’s not even close to good enough.

Let me put it simply. I blame Lou.

Last time the rangers beat the islanders this bad was on Valentines Day in the early 90s.
Had a nice 1940 sign which some Ranger fan grabbed from behind and tore up. Those were the days even if we got smoked still had 1940 chant. Game was at MSG.

Glad I didn’t watch. The frozen four was entertaining. The collective plus minus of the Isles top line and top pairing D was embarrassing. This further supports my feeling that Lou must go and the core must be broken up.
