GDT: GDT #74 New York Islanders vs Tampa Bay Lightning | April 1st | 7:30 PM | F/4-1 L

I think the guys that are still playing are, well, just kind of cooked. No, a couple are now playing their best hockey (like Engvall and DeAngelo) but so many others look like there's no more to give right now.

This said, I'm ready for this team to be out of wild card contention and gearing down for the season. Even before Roy's post-game comments, I was thinking that I've seen enough of Duclair. Shut him down for the season. Is anyone else playing injured? Shut him down too.

Let's get Perunovich and Reilly back in here. Maybe give Martin some shifts. Maybe have Mayfield rotate with Pelech and Pulock to finish the season.

But definitely call up a Jefferies and Maggio. Let's give them a look. Some others look like they need a break, including Pageau and maybe even MacLean. Might as well give Beckman and Foudy a look too. If we didn't have so many D, I'd say George can be brought back up as well.

Neither the big boys nor the baby Isles are playing for anything once mathematical elimination has set in.

Hope it sets in soon so we can take a different approach as we settle in for a better draft position.

SIDENOTE:
The Isles were on the PP. Then TBL took a penalty by tripping up Holmström. Pulock got the puck at the point and then just passed it to a Lightning player. There were another 13 seconds on that initial PP.

Why in all of God's great green nature wouldn't Pulock just take a step and pound on goal? I mean, if you're just giving it away, why not do so with a shot that might just go in?

He had time and space. It obviously didn't drop into his mind.

This moment was, for me, typical of how things work for a lot of our players up in the noggin.

is the guy even back to 100% strength after that groin injury ?
I was gonna say this, but if yes, all the more reason to shut him down for the remainder of the year.

Still hurt, playing bad, publicly humiliated by coach, lost season...Jon Taffer that bitch

I was only able to watch the third period last night. I now just root for Sabres, Bruins, Flyers, and Pens victories. Right now the prudent thing is hope for some luck with the lottery and try to reset. With saying that, it is rough to witness. National game last night on ESPN and the arena looked empty.

I think I it was to stop the clock. Give them possession and more time for the 5 on 3. Pulock most likely misses the net, even if he hits net and save made clock keeps ticking till possession and no 5 on 3.

We know 5 on 3, 5 on 2 doesn’t matter with this team but I think that is where his head was at, it’s the right play

And to think a lot on here were saying how good of a signing this was even after him being on every on team in the league.
You must know by now that people here will find excuses to defend literally anything that happens, because they have main character syndrome.

The Engvall signing was the most prominent example of that.

I gotta say I am not sure I have ever seen a coach go off to that extent publicly about a single player. I am not saying I disagree with what Roy said or that what he said is not true, but to call a player "god awful" publicly and question is effort is pretty unheard of. My biggest issue is if he can say stuff that strong about Duclair, where are his thoughts on Pageau and Pelech and Dobson? Because if Duclair is god awful, I don't even know what you could say about those three.
I can't say I watched the game but was he really that noticeable awful? Also never really heard a coach attack a player like that especially on a underwhelming team, I can say what this reeks of but I won't go there, maybe Roy is upset because he lobbied for Duclair to get signed

I understand this. And I knew exactly what Pulock was doing when he turned the puck over. It's generally the smart thing to do.

It's just, you're down 2 goals with but a few minutes remaining and you get the puck at the point with no-one around you. Even with the quick realization that you want more time on the 5-on-3, why wouldn't you just take two steps to the goal and unload on what was a consequence-free opportunity.

That's what I'd expect from a guy in a phase of desperation like the one our boys are in now.

Barry Trotz might be the greatest coach of all time. I’m not joking.

He made Pelech into the best defensive dman in the league. Pulock was a monster.

Team had a lead and it was game over.

I understand we don’t have Brock or Barzal but the vets shouldn’t look this bad.

We need to seriously retool.

I still believe Roy is a really good coach but he needs to have a better team in front of him.

We’ve said it so many times but this cold core has run its course. I Love Lee and think there’s probably not a guy with more character than him but I’d take advantage of his great year and sell him on the draft. With 1 year remaining it can happen. Trade Pelech and Pulock.

Get rid of McClean and let Roy pick his new assistant.

Trotz proved that defense is all about buy in and how you play. We went from worst in goals against to best in 1 year. That’s insane. It can be done.
In regards to special teams I’d start with dropping the coach tasked with the PP and PK. This does not completely absolve Roy but he had his hands full.

Remember, Trotz did just as bad with practically the same core roster and with a healthy Barzal and Nelson and with a team that was in its prime and 6 years younger. I would have absolutely have loved to see what Roy could have done with the same younger and more talented roster Trotz inherited. The loss of Leddy’s breakout speed would have been a difference alone. Roy was left old stale bread crumbs. Not easy to make an apples to apples comparison. 5 on 5 I much prefer to have watched the 2019 Islanders play under Roy’s system. But we’ll never know.

The age of the roster, the injuries, the basketball defensive mindset Lambert left him. These were not Roy’s fault. Give him one full year with a healthy roster and a new PP assistant coach and see how he does.

Well if we want a coach that holds players accountable then Roy is your guy. Duclair has absolutely been a total waste of a roster spot. Engvall’s game has improved after he was called out. Roy went to bat for Duclair and his lack of effort shows a severe lack of appreciation for the opportunity and faith Roy had for him. It’s deserved and a team that is in a transition needs to hear this sort of criticism or the retool will be in vain.
