GDT: GDT #73 New York Islanders @ Carolina Hurricanes | March 30th | 5 PM | F/L 6-4

While I got excited when Lee tied the game up at 4, Jarvis' second of the night sapped my interest for the game, as I dosed off for the second time in the game, but woke up just in time for Orlov's sixth. While the Isles are not mathematically out, losing both games this weekend in regulation really put a stake in their hopes.

Correction: Orlov scored the winner, while I woke up just in time for Jarvis' second of the night.

This has been a horrible season to watch. Very few genuine highlights and a lot of terribly annoying ones.
So what's next?
I guess at least we had meaningful hockey until late in season and injuries certainly haven't helped, but this is the second really frustrating season in a row.
A couple of years ago we seemed set on D. Sorokin and Varly with Pelech, Pulock, Romanov, and Dobson, even Mayfield, in front of them.
Ilya is good at his best, when he played well we played well. However, he is clearly not reliable over an extended stretch. Hoped he could do a Binnington one year, but ain't happening. Varly cooked. Pulock and Pelech have dropped off a lot defensively, and Dobson is absolutely lost at the moment.
Mayfield is on the outs. Romanov has been pretty decent, although he wasn't great tonight.
TDA actually one of our best D lately, his puck moving has been better than the rest. Surprised Perunovich didn't get more games for that reason. Bring back George perhaps.
Up front, no Barzal hurts, but Smooth Pierre V2.0 has lately been a ray of light in a sea of mediocrity.
Horvat frustrates the hell out of me. Doesn't convert enough of the great chances he gets. He hustles but doesn't capitalise enough.
Gatcomb has been a pleasant surprise.
Duclair been invisible.
Fasching tries but hasn't got it anymore, for whatever reason.
Palms, well he had to be traded didn't he? Made no sense to me, the season was done without Barzal and Nelson.
JGP looks cooked.
Holmstrom has an overall decent season although last couple of games not great.
Don't know what to make of Roy. Leave that to the hockey experts. In one way he's done okay to get them close with the injuries I guess, but on the other hand he's overseen all the lost leads, costly losses and especially the terrible special teams and empty net disasters.

If you are planning your day to sit around and watch this shitshow, you are a legit masochist.
I planned to not watch any Islander games this past weekend and didn't . Not that I'm blaming the players or coach. I still support them 100%, but it didn't take a genius to anticipate a couple of losses this weekend and I was not about to waste 5 hours of my weekend feeling bad. It is what it is. We can't demand a trade of our top goal scorer and that combined with the loss of our top playmaker expect wins against good teams. So I played some tennis and spent a good amount of time in my backyard on the Gulf enjoying the spring breakers wearing the bikinis.

Genuinely confused at some of the complaints about the team being bad down the stretch? This is what most of us wanted when they traded Nelson.

Making the playoffs as the second wildcard spot and losing in 5 games is not doing this organization ANY favors.

Pretty amazing that they managed to score 4. All in all, I've been very surprised at how many goals they've scored since dealing Nelson.

When it was 2-0 though, I thought we were headed towards a 4-0/5-1 style beating.

Was pretty impressive to see Lee score that 4th goal.

Impressive seeing how the Canes still have so many players who can be dangerous and generate chances at any given time.

Raise your hand if you were doing a doubletake when Jankowskit scored his 11th goal of the season. Are you kidding me?

And I look at that blueline and wonder what things will look like when Morrow is ready next season and Nikishin (most NHL-ready Dman outside the NHL on the planet) finally comes over from Russia.

Oh well, didn't see any points coming in this one, so no surprises.

All in all, as much as the team did tease us a bit with some points there for a while, we all know that the best thing that can happen for this team right now is to be in the draft lottery and get as high a pick as possible.

Still in this thing with 9 games left but the defensive lapses and individual errors compounded by the clear absence of messers Barzal and Nelson says it'd be mighty surprising to get more than 6 points in those final 9.

And the field of top 10-12 prospects in this summer's draft just keeps looking better and better. Heck, even Hagens is dropping incrementally now and his season is over (unless Team USA gets wild again and brings him over for the Men's WC). We all know how a good CHL playoffs or U18 can have guys catapulting others throughout the spring.

I love the Gulf. It speaks my name.

But I watch cuz I love this dumb team -- and I watch and shake my head and say "yeah -- that seems about right" -- it just doesnt get me mad or make me upset. We are a .500 team who always squeaks into the playoffs by a short a curly -- or misses it by 10 points. Either way really..

and it'll be the same scenario next year too. Yall should be used to it by now, I'd think......
