Not loving the 3rd line. Mclean and Zeke need a different linemate.

Nelson line generated most of the 5v5 chances. Will take a bit for Tsyplakov to handle 19 minutes a night of that style of play.

Overall not a bad game but more is required to beat a goalie of Oettinger's caliber.

Yes, not impressed with he third line or Wally. Actually would like to see Lee on the 4th line...call it a 3b line. Bring a quicker skater to the third....for now...

That third period proved they can control the play during a game. Now if they can score consistently combined with that tempo, the team will be dangerous this season.

Also, replace the 4th line RW FFS. Even going 11/7 would be a better decision then watching that skate around lost.

I agree with you about the defense. We have 4 guys locked up that are all on the downside of their careers for the next half decade.

With Nelson and Palms I think last years TDL was the time to move on from them as they probably had really good value and would have given wiggle room for us this off season. I like both players but they both should be dealt at the TDL this year unless we are a top 6 team in the conference at that time.

Holding onto Mayfield 2 years ago and not trading him at the TDL followed by a lifetime contract was a major major blunder
My bigger problem at hand is that the islanders DEFENSE just cannot function. They really need to either sell or try anything at this point because the team simply put looks lost. They have four and FIVE years left for both P&P and both have (at most) 40 points max between the two. Our defense doesn't push play at all, and in a league where you need at least two, maybe even three defensemen who are capable of pushing play, this is a disaster. Adam Pelech is very broken down at the ripe age of 30! Ryan Pulock over Devon Toews was a horrible choice and it severely limits the islanders offensive capability. Yes i know he was poor defensively here too but we gave Pulock that much to score at most 20 points in a year. Lamoriello is stuck in the old school of defense, and with the regression of P&P, it puts way more pressure on Romo and Dobson to not f*** up. Too bad one is just shattered mentally and the other is a dice game on if he wants to be amazing, or just becomes Brian Strait.

The other point on Mayfield feels harsh, since he's actually fine. I dont hate 3M for a guy who is solid. He should've gotten less than 7 years but again, Lamoriello is stubborn. If the isles continue to be bad then its time to trade Nelson and Palmieri for parts for the future. We need to draft a defenseman as well.

As much as there is to rip Lou over I do not believe Toews is something to blame him for. I am sure if he could have seen COVID coming he likely does not sign Pageau to such a big extension which would have freed up $$$ for Toews.

If I remember correctly they had to sign Barzal and Toews. Maybe somebody else too? Pulock is not the issue but Pelech is clearly becoming broken down.

This all being said the team got shut out last night and only allowed two goals. Was defense really the issue?

Bad example. The Coyotes GM, Bill Armstrong asked AZ fans to be patient and give him 5 years. This is the 5th year, unfortunately for Coyotes fans the team in in Utah now.

There are other examples. Rebuilds don’t work. Rebuilds are mostly about lying to fans and selling false hope. It’s not an actual course for success.

That doesn’t preclude making actual changes to the roster. Moving on from Lee, Palmieri, Nelson, Pageau. That’s the path to success.

Good 3rd period bounceback. Dallas played like it was satisfied to just ride the 2-0 lead home.

It worked. But we showed a real push when necessary.

Of course, the first two periods felt like the boys were hitting a wall for the most part.

I'm gonna give Tsyplakov some time before I start writing too much about him. I do notice that he's got some strong KHL habits and they don't fly here. He's certainly not too familiar with the KISS principle.

Gonna have to get used to simply playing the puck deep a bit more and not assume to that he can get away with his "corral the puck on the boards" junk. That was like an instant turnover almost every time he tried it.

Still adjusting though and he is good for a couple of better-than-average plays per game, thus far.

It's starting to appear like Tsyplakov is dragging his linemates up ice. Tsyp has a lot of energy and he and his linemates are all going to the dirty areas. The thing I noticed is that as many good scoring chances as that resulted in against Dallas, Nelson and Palm's ability to put them away will likely be an issue, imo, as will Nelson's ability to execute a clean quick pass to Tsyp.

I'm not sure if Tsyplakov is a round peg in a square hole with 21 and 29 yet but something with them seems incongruous. I get the feeling we'll be seeing 7-14-13 very soon. Might be a better fit.

Was able to catch this one, I'm not one for moral victories but at this point in the season I can admit they didn't look as bad as 3-0 would suggest.

Bad puck fumble caused the 2-0 hole and the frantic desperation in the 3rd.

They lost to a good team and a goalie who was a brick wall. Offensive deficiencies are still very much present.

One thing is for sure, Tsyplakov is an NHLer. Not sure what his ceiling is, but a useful NHLer acquired for nothing but money is a smart move by Lou.

The reason I’m hedging my statement is because its only been 2 games and 1 preseason game. But there are things I am noticing about 7-29-21 that make them seem like not the best fit together.

He definitely is a good NHL player at the very least but we kinda need our other guys to do more. 3rd line looks lost without Engvall.
