The Avs are not a budget team, that myth has to die. They are something like 700k below the cap right now. What they are is a team with a cap structure, and I doubt they're willing to pay Gaudreau two million more than MacKinnon due to that structure.

And after Duchene's contract is up?
Calgary shouldn't be worried about the next couple years. He's better than Duchene. Legit superstar, IMO.

I'd be willing to bet that Duchene will still be cheaper than Gaudreau when he signs his next contract with the Avs in 3 more years.
And, let's see what Duchene does with a new coach/system. He is a former PPG player, and was just 11th in 5v5 scoring among Cs, while being top 5 in FO%.
So from what I got from this thread the Avs are a budget team and chase all their young star players out of town. Not to mention that the Avs would take this and run, even though they wouldn't even be able to sign Gaudreau at his asking price for another year because they're so close to the cap.

Defensive abilities? Faceoffs? Skating? Duchene plays the more important position. Comparing Duchene to Gaudreau is like comparing Toews to Kane. Not saying Duchene is Toews, but Gaudreau isn't Kane either.

Duchene was also near PPG with Parenteau (43 pts in 47 games), who is significantly worse than Monahan.
He was near PPG over a short period with Fleischmann (21 pts in 22 games), until Fleischmann's lungs tried to kill him. Fleischmann's career high is 61 pts, with only one other season over 50 pts. Monahan is definitely better than Fleischmann.
