If the Flames don't want to pay Johnny Hockey what he's asking for then Matt Duchene is the next best option at his bargain cap hit of $6 million dollars for 3 more years.

Duchene has been rumored to be on the trading block for quite some time so this is a deal that could very well happen.

What would your reaction be to a Duchene + Rantanen/1st for Gaudreau trade?

Duchene's a hell of a player, but I'd rather give Gaudreau Crosby money. Kid's got a legit shot at an Art Ross soon.

Calgary would want more in return that just Duchene.

Johnny is younger and more productive. Calgary is(probably) comfortable with Bennett and Monahan as 1C and 2C going forward.

I think you're going to get killed by your own fanbase for 1st/Rantanen + Duchene for JG. Rantanen and Duchene for JG was already proposed in that thread and shot down. I doubt 1st + Duchene fares better.

I think we'd take that and run.

Colorado also has an issue with overpaying young star Hockey players. They already chased Ryan O'reilly out of town because of it.

Avs can't consolidate assets for an upgrade. And notice how quiet it is in regards to Avs players on the move now. Remember who is gone... So the whole so and so was on the block doesn't really apply.

Varlamov, Duchene, MacKinnon, Landeskog, Johnson, Barrie...all signed for at least three more years at reasonably cap hits. It's a real pity how many good players the Avs are just chasing out of town.

As to the OP, TV pretty much nailed it by saying the Avs can't consolidate assets to get upgrades right now. The team needs quality depth, which means proposals like Duchene and Rantanen in a package is a very easy no.

Calgary says no. Gaudreau is younger and better than Duchene.

there is zero evidence to suggest such a thing unless you mean "better at putting points on the board".

better at the overall game of hockey? no he isnt.

JG doesnt kill penalties and wouldnt be a guy you would put on the ice to protect a lead late in the game.

MD > JG unless you are talking about a hockey pool of course.

The only reasons why Avs fans wouldn't pull the trigger this trade are an strong sentimental attachment to Duchene and (maybe) contract concerns. Johnny Gaudreau is absolutely the better player. Duchene has made strides defensively, but he still ain't all that in his own end.

In no universe is this right and in no universe Calgary would consider this

Nah...I'll take Duchene. I'll take the guy who can play center, very good on faceoffs, draws a ton of penalties and has already proven he can put up around 60-70 points on a regular basis. Oh and Duchene can also play wing and his 5 on 5 numbers are always near the top of the league + he makes a reasonable $6M for the next 3 years.

Why would the Avs want to trade a guy like that just so they could pay Gaudreau the amount he's seeking? How smart would it be for the Avs to trade another Center for a Winger when the center you DO have can play wing in a pinch??

What makes Gaudreau so much better? His career high last season as a 22 year old? The 78 points he put up in 79 games played last year? How is that NOT comparable to Duchene's 70 points in 71 games played 3 years ago as a 22 year old??

As far as being younger, Gaudreau is younger by 2 years...big deal. I'm not suggesting or trying to push this trade from a Calgary point of view, I'm just saying that I wouldn't do it from a Colorado point of view.

We already had one GIANT headache with a player wanting a ton of money with O'Reilly...there is no reason to acquire another. (I doubt very much that MacKinnon would have signed for $6.3M per year for 7 years if ROR has been on the team already earning $7.5M - now that's going to be the Sabres issue if Eichel puts up huge numbers).

Good point. Was just about to post something alike

Why? So you could be wrong with them?

As has already been posted...what good players have the Avs run out of town? Their entire core is locked up on good deals for at least the next 3 years.

The old regime that gave ROR a sour taste in his mouth about the organization has zero control now as well.

So please, enlighten Avalanche fans what players they run out of town and how terrible their current management is at retaining their talent.

MacKinnon, Duchene, Landeskog, Johnson, Barrie, Varlamov have all been signed long term for less than market value.

O'Reilly is not the norm, but the exception.

Only some avs fans are saying they wouldn't trade duchene for Gaudreau, if Calgary offers this to Colorado the Avs would bow down and say thank you.
