Signs are not 100% effective.

If I own a hotel and put up a no hugs sign, there will still be people who disobey it.

And the sign only said no swimming. As Inkling said, it could be there for a ton of reasons. Most people are not just going to assume the sign means that there are gators in the pond.

And if it really is a man-made pond, then Disney could have originally put in something that would block gators from getting to the beach. They probably will now since it happened.

If you don't want to come off like a kid, start sounding more like an adult.

Statements like "People need to keep themselves safe. That's what instincts are for. Welcome to survival" don't come out of the mouths of people with significant experience in the real world.

Saying people need to be responsible for their own safety is not adult?

I'll be sure to tell the next angry black bear with cubs I see...
"Bro, I paid for all day parking! You better take this up with the ranger"

He checked to make sure I actually paid and it was cool. Otherwise he said he would've mauled me.

Phew

So if gators are a clear and present threat in that area, why the hell are they building bungalows on the water and holding nighttime family-themed parties there?

It's stunning that your "have some common sense" is directed at the family from Nebraska who assumed that Disney's safety precautions were effective, as opposed to the Disney resort whose employees actually live in Florida and deliberately placed their guests in a position to be eaten by an alligator.

You're acting like this is a common occurrence. This has happened once in 46 years. It was nothing but a freak accident.

Rofl, you're out to lunch and making yourself look like an idiot. Keep on going, it's rather amusing

There hadn't been a complaint / sighting of an alligator in weeks by either guests or the full time unit that supervise/kill gators. Despite that, I don't think Disney did enough. If there's a chance, even the slightest chance, that an alligator will snatch a child near or in the water... then you remove access to the site or take further preventative measures. Maybe even just a "Beware of Alligators"... To warn all your guests travelling from around the world

It's a tragedy, it's nature, it's an extremely rare occurrence... and Disney will have to dig deep into their pockets and compensate the family

I don't think Disney will be paying a cent to the family. They will probably have some clause in the TOS when they booked the room releasing them from any liability.

If I may offer a gator anecdote as a FL resident, these guys can show up anywhere.
I live in an apartment that has a tiny retention pond that swelled with recent rain. Within 2 days there was a decent sized (3-4 foot) gator in there. No idea where he came from, they'll travel a long distance to get to a new body of water.

I guess the point of this is to say that it would be practically impossible to keep that lagoon (the Seven Seas?) gator free. Impossible.

These poor folks were not from here, it is hard to picture what is quite frankly a prehistoric killer reptile potentially lurking in anything bigger than a puddle. Particularly in a resort like that, so I can understand just a little them not being prepared for this even being a possibility.

Is a resort in the Caribbean responsible for a shark attack on its beach?

Is a trailer park in the Rockies responsible for a bear attack on a camper at a camp site that left out food?

Furthermore, is Disney responsible if a bird ***** on someone's shirt and ruins it? What if the weather ruins someones vacation? If a bee stings someone and their allergic, is Disney responsible for allowing bees on their property? What if I get bit by a mosquito, do I have a case?

Alligators can't just fly into the park

That's a lot easier to prevent. Just take the trump approach

Yeah, well that might not be as effective as you think.

Yup.

New wet detention pond was built recently. Community has walls/fences all around it.
Saw a baby gator in there. Sure it's mommy is in there as well.

I feel terrible for the family.
