And why not? Our rebuild started when we decided to go on a massive firesale. They sold players but most importantly, changed all their staff.
Their 2 best players will most likely be Hutson and Demidov, who were drafted in 2022 and 2024
I don't think they planned to be a playoffs team as soon as this year (Objective was to be "in the mix"), they probably believed in Hutson but nobody knew he would be that good that fast.
By the way Chabot is 28 y/o, Batherson is 26 y/o, etc and they're going to make the playoffs for the first time. Some teams beat their own expectations, some others don't
They have not been "pushing", they brought Laine because they had the cap and it came with a 2nd round pick and they got offered Carrier for a near bust. No other moves was "pushing". They played prospects as their backup and they struggled most of the season, they were not trying to make the playoffs at all costs.
2021-22 is when we should have started to contend seriously for a spot and stop being eliminated in November. Not sure why you're saying that, it just confirms my point that we had terrible management.
