This weekend I redid the project of getting nhl API infos in C++.

I have made the players dB and gamelogs db (goaltender games are not correct yet in them yet) and playoffs game are yet to be added.

Here the DBs in sqlite, put on a google account made for this:
DatabaseComplete - Google Drive

Group of players that achieved 50 goals in 50 consecutive played games:

The ratio was made by looking at the average of 10 players that achieved to score the most goals in 50 games during a period around the one that made it.

Would probably change the number of 10 to take into account the number of young Canadian male between those dates or league size (if people have better idea or know statistics at all...)

It's always spectacular to see how far above the rest both Gretzky and Lemieux are. And yes - Gretzky always ahead of Lemieux too

An awful lot of this data clusters around 1917-20, 1942-45, 1969-72, and 1979-93. Of course, that is to be expected based on what we know about the circumstances (and resultant scoring rates) of those time periods.

As a result, three outliers that jump out at me are Hull in 66-68, Jagr in 95-96, and McDavid in 20-21.

Don't think it had ever sunk in that Cam Neely scored 84 goals over an 82 game stretch. I know, he was injured a bunch, they weren't all consecutive, etc. But still, damn.

And Petr Bondra's 71 goals in 82 games just as the dead puck era was getting underway really stands out. Obviously having an offseason between some of those games skews things a bit, but the fact that he came within spitting distance of Bossy's best streak (in a higher-scoring era) is wild.

Hull in 66-68, Jagr in 95-96, and McDavid in 20-21.

I would add Bondra, it ended just has the dpe and is low on the list so in no way because it is particularly high here, but because he is not in the Hof, never had a top 3 in all star team not a serious single trophy (rocket did not exist) consideration ever, of the inter lock-out period from 94/95 to 03/04 only Jagr has more goals. Selanne has less in more games.

Has for Gretzky-Lemieux, looking at list that has Esposito-Orr-Bossy-Yzerman-Jagr-Lafleur-McDavid in a very similar range, a long list of players slowly creeping from 140 to 160x and them studently alone complete outlier do put an emphasis of how much more than a product of their era they were, without those 2 specials, no one really significantly beat Esposito point record (Yzerman scored 3 more points in 2 more game) in 50 year's and is legacy is quite different, while those 2 did it 13 time together.

In the other direction, how much consistent Bossy was, year's after year's, playoff after playoff do show why he is in the best goalscorer of all time (and with how noisy goalscoring can be it is not crazy), but that is peak do not look special at all, compared to his points.

Peak Bondra seems to have been almost forgotten about, but he was a force of nature for a few years.

Babe Dye is pretty impressive here. 1st in goals in 1920-21, 1st in 1921-22, 1st in 1922-23, 2nd in 1923-24 (he missed 5 games), and 1st in 1924-25, which isn't even included in his sample (above).

The first half of the 1920s are dominated in scoring so much by Dye and Cy Denneny, it's akin to Gretzky and Lemieux in the 1980s/90s. Goals from 1920-21 to 1924-25:

148 -- Babe Dye
132 -- Cy Denneny

74 -- Billy Boucher
72 -- Punch Broadbent
69 -- Reg Noble

@MadLuke This is interesting. Any chance you can include the comps and ratios in the other tables as well? Probably a good idea, as you suggested, to adjust the comp size based on era, though it may not make a significant difference.

I take it will have some relevant effect for decade near large expansion.

My thought would be to adjust the sample size of players used in the comparison like this, for each year and estimate of the number of Canadian between 20 and 34 year's old growth in Canada, the number of Canadian that played at least one game or 40% of the season are just there for a reference:

And maybe make one Canadian players only, to have a constant production of the average elite Canadian player has the most constant barometer I can think over time.

Hey @MadLuke - great data as always.

With all the data you have compiled on your end - do you have an easy way to find the highest output game streaks vs a set # of games?

Example:

after Lemieux's return from cancer in 1993, he has a stretch of 13 games where he scored 26 goals and 45 points. Is that the best 13 game stretch ever, for either goals or points? What about 15 game samples? Or 10 games, etc?

Maybe there's already a thread on this somewhere

Yes it is not bad to do specially if you want to do it player by player, Mario best 13 games stretch look like those (if we remove those that overlap):

The 26 goal is the highest I noticed. I had looked at a few Gretzky seasons - as far as I can tell the 1983-1984 season is the only one where he had a stretch of 13 games and above 45 points, and he did it more than once. I think he has a separate stretch that year of ~47 points too.

Would be really fun to see some more data on different game sample sizes

I ran for every player that scored at least 500 points in the nhl, I took their best 30 stretch of x amount of games (to try to catch more than a cluster of the same overlapping streaks).

While limiting each players to their bests stretch only.

How about most points/goals/assists in 28 straight playoff games?
Among players with 50 career playoff points or more

28 consecutive playoff games best stretch, single one best by players kept (because Gretzky best 50 games streak would simply fill the top 50 I think)

Jagr look really good here (in context of when a lot of those game are played) versus is playoff reputation in some part of the discourse.

Playoff goals scoring seem to be a variable that moved a bit less than many and it let people from the 40s/50s/60s/70s/etc... show up with less of a crowding of 80s/early 90s, even if it will still show up at the very top.

Most points in a 82 games playoff stretch (to look at it in today season lenght):

Bolded at the top those that did it mostly outside the 80s/early 90s
Gretzky separation here from the rest including Lemieux is really huge and Mario separation from number 3 is bigger than Howe separation from Geoffrion and Hull I think.

Claude Lemieux live up to is reputation here, in that window:
NHL Stats

Again some occasion where Gretzky do leave some place to others, Gretzky consistency being one of is biggest strength he tend to remove them over long run.

90s (Gretzky is missing here because he had 30 better stretch in the 80s and that was my system recording limit, looking at it manually he had a 48 points stretch)

Great post, above. A few things strike me:

In the 82 playoff games for points:
-- Kucherov's assists are really impressive for era
-- Bernie Nicholls above Steve Yzerman

In the 82 playoff games for goals:
-- Maurice Richard is a total stud

In the 2010's 28-game playoff stretch:
-- Daniel Briere!

Other than that one (and mentioned Claude Lemieux) and the mentioned Briere 19 goals bested only by Ovechkin in all the 2000s.

Elias had a good stretch there after 2003, (he went 5 in5, 16 in 9, 10 in 10, and 6 in 5)

Theo Fleury, I think it was a recent subject of conversation and how much it was first round playoff and what not, but still, like late 90s Jagr over late 00s Ovechkin, hard to fault him for the flames.

People that did beat Gilmour crazy playoff peak in raw numbers, Gretzky-Lemieux-Lafleur-Esposito

Lafleur and Bossy look extremely good here, without much surprise obviously.

Again unlike Lemieux-Gretzky, it is against a case of Howe offensive peak (at least in points and goals) does not seem to separate itself much from Beliveau/Hull, in this case not even going above them, while those simply are in a different category of their own.

In the Savard vs Stastny talk of the offensive players after Gretzky of the 80s, Savard look good here as well.

Because Orr did not play in 82 games in is playoff career he does not show up in one of the list but he should still with 92 points.

Looking at how long MacInnis stretch took, 10 season (considering there 2 cups final there) those flames got ou in the first round way too often.

Bear in mind most of Savard's playoff points are 1st and 2nd-round series against Norris division opponents who would have been non-playoff teams in any other division.

I think Kucherov is gonna go down with a legit claim as the best playmaking winger ever, he already has the most assists in a season for a winger and the 2 playoff runs with the most assists for a winger.

Auston Matthews is close to getting 70 goals in 82 games (he has 66 goals in his last 80 games).

The most recent player to get 70+ goals in 82 games was Mario Lemieux (75 goals from October 1st, 1995 to November 2nd, 1996).

Who was the next-most recent? Was it Peter Bondra's streak? (In terms of "usual suspects", I'm not aware of Ovechkin, Stamkos, Jagr or Selanne (post-1993) ever reaching 70 in an 82 game span - corrections welcome).
