Speaking of PPs, the problem is not not shooting, but finishing, just not enough movement to get high quality looks…

Karlsson has tried a bunch of poorly timed slapshots into shin pads.
The movement is the #1 problem right now. At least we've finally figured out zone entries, thanks to our 1-man breakout master.

Also, other PP units tend to have actual net-front presence. Our coaches probably still think Guentzel can somehow do it in defiance of the laws of physics.

I can't imagine PIT having a draft result like the DAL 2017 draft. Drafted a hell of a core in a single year. Amazing that they could've even had Makar instead of Miro.

3 franchise core players in 1 draft. They really lucked out. Adding Pavelski and having Benn + Seguin though injuries etc. Really helped them pick stuff up.

This is what i would do as a line-up.
Jake Guentzel-Sidney Crosby- Drew O’Connor

Reilly Smith-Evgeni Malkin-Rickard Rakell

Bryan Rust -Lars Eller-Radim Zohorna

Matt Nieto-Noel Acciari-Jeff Carter

Sid and Jake need a big guy and net front to provide time and space. Why Sullivan cannot see this, is beyond me.

DOC s game play does not warrant top 6 minutes at all.

I complain plenty about Sullivan so credit where it's due for scratching Ruh (and finally getting a look at Ludvig) instead of just stubbornly sticking with him after a very poor game. Also like the move to go with Ned instead of Jarry.

Stars still win handily, though.

Yea I am definitely interested in this move. I do feel RUH should have already sat and had Ludvig beside POJ but POJ wasn't great so whatever both can sit.

I expect us to play well, and beat the Stars. For whatever reason, we always show up against the better teams out West (except for Oilers). I hope our 3rd line keeps building on the game they had against the Blues.

As Nedel will start and win, I bet this will start a Nedel vs Jarry conversation (ie. should Nedel get more starts? Is Jarry the answer? etc).

LUDVIG TO DEBUT

Defenseman John Ludvig, claimed off waivers from Florida before the start of the season, will make his NHL debut tonight on the third pairing alongside Ryan Shea.
I asked Mike Sullivan after the skate what he is looking to see from Ludvig.
“I think he's a steady, solid defending defenseman,” Sullivan said. “I think he's going to bring us some some grit in the battle areas. I think he's strong at the net front. He defends well, he skates well, he has a good stick. And I just think he's going to bring that element to our overall game.”

Yeah I posted in the off-day thread some stuff from NHL Edge that shows how little player movement there is on the PP.

Glad that Ruh is in the press box tonight after a rough outing. I'm still of the mindset that POJ > Shea but I'm sure he'll get his opportunity again soon if/when this latest pairing of Shea-Ludvig falters. Don't have super high expectations for Ludvig but I'm hoping he can at least play with an edge. Need some crease clearing and just don't get walked defensively.

I'm probably in the minority but I haven't hated the Dubas-Sully relationship so far. I liked trying things like the Harkins pickup and then quickly pivoting when it isn't working. At least we seem to be acknowledging when things aren't working (3rd pairing, bottom 6) and trying a different solution.

Sounds like a good partner for POJ ;)

Not gonna lie, pretty surprising that Sullivan is playing a guy with no NHL experience with a guy who only has one game under his belt. Both guys are also LDs which is a sin.

I don't know how much credit he deserves for finally realizing something that dumdums on a message board have been saying for months, if not years.

The Stars always play the most boring hockey against us.

This will be a 2-1 OT win or loss.

Me neither but hey... I'll take it over just shrugging and spouting some platitudes about "compete level" and "valued penalty killer" while continuing to dress the guy.

Going into tonight's game, Dallas is the only team in the league to not yet concede a powerplay goal. So, tonight's as good night a night as any for the Pens to snap their funk. :dunno:

Also I didn't even realize y'all signed Shea in the offseason, I remember thinking Dallas would call him up at some point but it never happened and he just grinded in the AHL for three seasons. Nice to see him finally get his break in the pros.

Good luck tonight. :yo:

Unfortunately, the Stars are good and we likely be beaten badly which will give Sully reason to never do this again.

Sullivan only scratched Ruh to prevent his boy from going -4 in this massacre
Yeah, I think Sully knows exactly what he's doing.

After this shellacking, he'll give Ruh 75 games this season.

2005 Pens literally blows this away. You may have heard of a couple guys named Crosby and letang.
