There are 6 weeks left in the year and only a few big releases left, what are your picks for the best games of the year? I haven't had as much time to play games as I would've liked so I'm interested in hearing everyone's opinions. Here's what I have so far:

9/10:
Sonic X Shadow Generations
Persona 3 Reload

8.5/10:
Silent Hill 2
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6

8/10:
Dragon's Dogma 2
Astro Bot

7.5/10:
Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2

Interested but haven't played enough to judge:
Metaphor: ReFantazio
Echo Point Nova
Alone in the Dark
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
Penny's Big Breakaway

I don't usually play games when they come out, getting to them eventually when they go on sale because I'm thrifty, but this year I actually got quite a few new ones. Started with Infinite Wealth, then FF Rebirth, then Eiyuden Chronicles, and finally Wukong. I'd probably place EC as last in that group but the other three are so close that I could probably give you a reason why one is my GotY and then change it to another the next. I am 20 hours into P3 Reload and it'll end up in my trio by the time I'm done with it.

I'm usually not too impressed by the yearly crop of videogames/favorites, but I actually felt like I was more dialed in/interested this year than I usually am. These are all the games I played:

T1. Black Myth: Wukong - 3.5 (Great) [it has pretty notable mechanical flaws, but I love most of how the lore was handled, and those chapter interludes are absolutely outstanding-- It's A LOT better if you're familiar with the source material and are willing to read portraits]
T1. Animal Well - 3.5 (Great) [almost 100% based on mechanical design]
3. Silent Hill 2 Remake - 2.5 or 3.0 (Good/Very Good) [game progression is bloated, but super impressed by the storytelling structure/concept-- actually prefer the delivery over the original]
4. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth - 1.5 (Neutral) [it has its moments, and I'm actually not AS annoyed as I was at the end of Remake, because thematically, I can see light at the end of the tunnel this time, but mostly it's just artlessly all over the place and a total mess]
5. Cocoon - 1.5 (Neutral) [I feel like it's perfect/inspired for what it is, but it isn't trying to be all that much and the experience is very limited]
6. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown - 1.0 (Negative) [felt sound but soulless to me]

Three that really grab/impress me + one I'm kind of obsessive about despite lukewarm feelings is above average engagement for me.

Interested in but haven't played:
Thank Goodness You're Here (somewhat charmed by what I saw)
Metal Slug Tactics (doesn't sound too well received, but an intersection of a bunch of things I'm a sucker for)

Hearing a lot about but skeptical due to certain qualities:
Astrobot (just the opposite of visually appealing to me)
Metaphor: ReFantazio (the Persona thing just doesn't interest me)
Balatro

Animal Well is the only game I played that came out this year. So I guess by default?

Though, my new character in Elden Ring is very close to being ready for SotE.

The only games I really enjoyed from this year were VLADiK Brutal and Children of the Sun. They are definitely not GotY quality titles.

I'm just going to say Stalker 2 because I really don't have much plans to play anything else while I'm really looking forward to Stalker 2.

I was going to vote for Super Mario Wonder, but then I saw it was from October 2023, the only game from this year I think I played was Astro Bot, which has been very very good, but not sure if it reaches GOTY territory

This is a weird year i feel like. Most of the big releases were either JRPGs (nothing wrong with that) or a remake.

Top 3 would probably be Astro Bot, Rebirth and then Balatro.

This doesn't seem to be talked about anywhere else and it's not worth starting a new thread over, but I just saw those game award nominations and Aerith/Brianna White being nominated for best performance is pretty baffling to me.

Probably one of the weaker performances in the game by a main cast member.

Black Myth Wukong was fun and memorable despite some mechanics flaws. Really cool to see different mythologies for a change.

On being new alone, it'd give it GOTY.

I only played two games released this year and they were FFVII Rebirth, and Metaphor Refantazio so my vote goes to Metaphor and by a wide margin

Seems I'm the only one here who played Shadow Generations!

Astro Bot is a very well made game and I can understand why Sony fans would call it their game of the year. For me though, Shadow Generations beats it in pretty much every aspect, especially replay value. I can't see myself touching Astro Bot again while Shadow Generations brings that hybrid of platformer and racing gameplay where it really feels great to master getting through each stage without losing momentum.
