GDT: Game 82: Sharks vs. Oilers 7:30pm NBCSCA

I'm sorry, it's hard to talk about optimism for next year when they just got shut out in the last game of the season. I know they have to put on a happy face, and there were positives this year, but this time and place just feels depressing.
What does getting shut out to end this season really matter for next season though? It doesn't. It'll be its own thing. Rebuilds don't happen all that quickly and they're a long way to go. They will probably get better next season. How much? We need to see what Grier does to make a real estimate on that. A 45 goal improvement on goal differential over the season is a pretty substantial improvement.

Vibes mostly. It was a depressing end to the season. I'm sure those vibes will change as we go through the offseason and the draft, but it's hard to get excited right now.

What is the consensus on Hoshida this year. I thought he got better over time, but the way NBC Sports handled the Brodie Brazil situation really did leave a bad taste in my mouth. At least Hoshida didn't have to leave the Sharks for the A's in the last 2 months though, which is a plus.
he did get better as the season went on but he has a long way to go. it's not an easy job so I give grace.

Of course it's hard in this moment. Losing sucks and dealing with Couture's untimely end of his playing career in a shutout loss at home was certainly a sad way to end a season that did have a lot of good to it. You just can't put too much emotional stock into the tail end of a developing season when they're playing an AHL lineup for the most part.

Getting shutout in the last game of the season would be pretty on brand for the worst team in the league I guess. Improving only 5 points from last season was quite a bit less than what I had expected too. But top 3 picks don't come without cost, sacrifices must be made!
In December, when they were like 10-16, they were on pace to shatter last season's point total. Then they shipped out Blackwood and several forwards to maintain the tank. You can't take this season's point total seriously. Had they preserved the team, they would have won much more.

They would have hit a wall eventually. I don't think it was as much Blackwood going so much as Georgiev playing as much as he did. I think once Blackwood was traded Grier had little choice but to just tank the season.

Really nothing matters until we know where the team is ultimately drafting. I don't think I could say it was worth it if they end up picking 3rd. Even with the extra couple late firsts that may amount to nothing.

Yes. Consider this:

1) Blackwood had to be gone by the TDL, at the very least
2) Under the barrage he would have faced while in SJS, no doubt he would have buckled a little

I used to think that with a full season of Blackwood, this team probably finished no worse than 30th, likely around 26-28. But after seeing how this team just collapsed during parts of the season, and especially after the TDL (no Walman or Zetterlund), I must reevaluate...maybe Blackwood gets them 10 extra points putting them at 31...perhaps even 20 and they'd still be 3rd worst.

Couture just talked about how Grier will bring in a lot of help during the offseason. Something is brewing...

Well, the goaltending wasn't as horrific down the stretch as much as the offense just dried up, which shouldn't be all that surprising. Outside of that weird Minnesota game and Toronto game they didn't put up much. In fact they only scored more than 3 four times in the last 31 games.

SNOG announcement

No SNOG.

SNOGLossFail.JPG

This means that we have another season ending with SNOG co-champs, which has happened several times before (I may edit in right number after the drink wears off if I care enough by then). Congrats @weastern bias and @PattyLafontaine on the title!
