tonight in "Nem's adventuers in an ancient game" I headed to one of the original home cities in Everquest, which I was quite familiar with because I usually relocated my characters there: Qeynos. It's a silly name built on a bad sorta-pun because the original development studio was owned at the time by Sony. So it's "Sony EQ" backwards.
Anyway, in this human city the guild hall for clerics and paladins is a UFO. I'm not even just making a pithy comment. Look at the damn thing:
That blue thing to the right is the teleporter to head inside.
See? UFO.
The place is quite ancient looking, graphics-wise because the developers have not updated some of the game's oldest areas from how they were made in 99/2000 when it launched.
Why is it a UFO? No idea. It just is because it's weird and fun.
Earlier I joked about finding some silly diversions to get us through the off-season as a group, but this got me thinking: I doubt there's much appetite but I would love to get a group of people to take a spin playing a 25 year old MMO for a while with me. It's totally free to play if you don't mind a couple of annoying quirks and some restrictions that will almost certainly not significantly impact new players.
Like I said, I doubt there's any interest given that these janky, early 2000s looking screenshots are a huge selling point and most old school MMOs are a dying breed, but I figured it was worth a shot.
