I find it surprising that he really ever produced, has a decent release i guess.

I kind of agree with the sentiment. I would add that he gets into soft spaces outside of coverage in addition to a decent shot.

I get the impression he has probably been a decent 3rd wheel option for teams with strong duos, he doesn't have enough dimension to his game to ever be a play driver.
