GDT: Game 80: Red Wings vs stars 7:00 pm et 4/14/25

Was it ? Been flippin back forth with mtl game to see Demidov and if they choke 😂 but I’m sure the wings game will create life long memories ... f*ck yzerman’s game 7 double of winner vs stl when tarasenko got his 11th goal after going scoreless for 37 games

Yeah, it was a good game to watch. The Keating tribute stuff was great. The post game was great. Not to mention the game was 6-4.

I don't know how much more "fun" you need, fam.

winning is good when you know that the other side actually tried. If this game was actually important for Stars we would have lost this.
And when we lose games like this the team gets taken to the woodshed for not taking advantage. "Oh my god, how could we have lost to a team that doesn't even care!one!!11"
Losing is bad, winning is also bad, everything is bad.

Respect to the people down there to see an already eliminated Wings team on a Monday evening.
I was at the game (and go to about 25 games a year). It didn’t seem much different than your average weekday night. Crowd was like 10% less engaged than usual. People were having a good time (except for when that puck trickled behind Oettinger and we couldn’t bang it home. Our section was irate.)

It is kind of weird going to games when the team has already been eliminated, but I've watched whole seasons of this team during years where I knew they’d be eliminated before the season even started. You watch for those highlight reel moments, even if they’re rare. You watch to see young guys advance. You watch so you can have a realistic gauge of where the team is at. I feel like if you can’t find reasons to support your team when they’re down, you aren’t a fan of them, you’re just a fan of winning.

Boys are on fire. 5-2-1 in the last 8. Just 6 points back.

Another frustrating season and season end.
I think it kind of sums things up though what we've watched all year; wildly inconsistent stretches of play

Our former prospects are now some of our best rostered players

Our veteran players and depth are getting outmatched and need to be overhauled

I know a lot of us are really hopeful that roster weaknesses get addressed. Especially since the kids are arriving, and quick - Kasper's emergence a legit top6 C, Johansson proving to potentially be a legit middle pair guy long term, Soderblom finding his game, ASP and Danielson on the way to help out the push next year

I gotta think Steve sees the same things here and makes his moves accordingly. I hope..

I guess this is sarcasm but I think it somehow best describes the state of the fans/team/management when you are missing playoff for 9 straight seasons. we need to ask Sabres fans, they are pro in this question :)
It's not sarcasm, it's commentary. I know that I am reacting to the aggregate of the conversations here, but if I take that said aggregate, there is nothing that can be seen as good. There is some sort of notion that being a 'real' fan means interpreting everything in the worst light. I am not getting paid to find and fix failures. There is a huge range of unpredictability, and it is not my job to find all the errors.
I disagree with the notion that being negative and critical defines a real fan.
Plenty of things to complain about, but I really wonder if the the usual whiners are external instigators

I still think this team thinks it's a burden to play for the post season. As soon as the pressure is off, they seem to just enjoy playing hockey again. Any time the pressure is on them to win games, they fall apart.
You know, I was thinking the same thing last night during the game. "Man, we are way better when there isn't anything at stake." That's why we beat good teams like Dallas when it doesn't matter, but choke against teams like Columbus, Montreal, and Utah.
Next year should be better. Petry gone, ASP possibly coming in to replace him, Holl to the press box.

My issue with this is that we didn't play poorly for most of this stretch since the 4 nations. Last year they looked awful, they fell apart. This year was not that. They deserved something more than losses and no points on a lot of nights.

I think it was more a question of us just not being good enough to push thru in those games. If a couple of guys aren't going, we're screwed. As you said, next year should be better. Really looking forward to more kids in the lineup.

Those are not the two players you want on a 2 on 0

who cares about 10th vs 13th. Draft well and it won’t matter. There’s no Michkov in this draft. Winning is always good

Well one of those has a chance, albeit a small one, to move into the top 2 picks through the lottery. The other one doesn't. Plus you always want to draft in the top 10 always better odds at getting a good player.

Winning is absolutely pointless at this stage.

all the picks have a chance to move up, it just wouldnt be to the top 2. So you'd get 3rd instead of 1st.

Winning is good for players. When there's a talent like Michkov who could slide, sure. This year that isn't the case. Schaefer/Misa/Hagens/Frondell/Martone will be gone. After that it's pretty wide open. Eklund could even slide pretty low.

Have to say I do like seeing Burgers get an opportunity on the first line. Team clearly needs to find someone who can click with Larkin and Raymond. Not suggesting he is the long term option, and I find it damning that the coaching staff did not try him there till the season was all but lost. BUT, many here have stated his game requires being around others with more talent, and perhaps we are seeing that.

Postgame, HSJ asked Berg something along the lines of what does he need to do to produce consistently and he seemed to think it was a weird question (HSJ makes every question weird), and basically said stay on a line with Larkin and Raymond. He is not a dumb player, he is plenty talented, if he sticks on the top line these last two games I could see him doing alright. I really want to see him do well.

3rd doesn't get us Schaefer or Misa. They are far and away the best prospects in this draft.

Our dominant PP just became slightly more normalized. This team cannot compete with most 5 on 5. We aren't good enough defensively or offensively. We have to sacrifice on one side to reap the other, but even then we aren't really good at either style due to our roster makeup.

Last year we sacrificed the defense for the offense. I think this actually suits our current lineup overall a bit more because we have a lot of smaller/ fast offensive players. This year we tried to sacrifice the offense for the defense but we don't really have the forward lineup to make this happen. What it did was lead to a very stagnant team 5 on 5 at offense and defense. When our PP operated at an elite level we won, when he fell back to earth a bit we lost.

I get why we changed, because ultimately almost no NHL team wins in the playoffs playing that style. You don't want to play that style and create those habits long term, especially with young players. When Yzerman did nothing to bring in players (outside of rookies) that could play a more defensive style he basically ensured that our season would be somewhat futile.

We will slowly get better at this more two way defensive style through the kids as Kasper, Mazur, Ray, Danielson, Ed, Seider, etc are good two way players. My hope is that Yzerman does a better job supplementing the kids in the off season.

He doesn’t do near enough of the grunt work. I will be disappointed if Berggren is here next year
