He has no elite offensive skills.
Which is really disappointing for a former 2OA pick but doesn't mean he can't be a net positive middle six player for a contender. You know, the type of guy that teams, like the Rangers, end up trading multiple picks for at the deadline because they don't have them on their team. I think there is a distinction there.

How was he ranked so high in the draft? (I'm not arguing, just wondering.)
Because at the SHL level, he did show elite offensive skills. It just unfortunately didn't translate to the NHL level and he's not the only top 5 pick in the last few years where that is the case. Neither is Lafreniere although he absolutely has shown moments of those elite skills which is all the more maddening that he just looks invisible out there this whole season.

Only just getting home and seeing the lineup and the score. Eventually, I will forget the score. I will not forget the lineup. We are incapable of giving promising young players room to play. We refuse to do it, and we will continue to refuse to do it; we may as well just start planning around it.
Yep, I started planning around it by not really watching the games anymore.

Lavi is likely gone after this season. Drury had a public spat with Turk, after a game, during the Rangers/Devils series. I'm surprised he hasn't done so with Laviolette. Either way, I don't see Lavi heading into next season as a lame duck coach but you never know. Oh and I don't believe Drury is going anywhere.

I'm bummed Parsinen scored because for the short term it means with get Othmann and Perrault scratched on Saturday (if Montreal gets a point) and longterm knowing Drury and the Rangers being the Rangers they're going to be like "duh.....two points....potential...we RFA quailify".
If Othmann and Perreault remain scratched over Pärssinen, it doesn't really matter at all what he would've done in this game. The core problem remains. The problem isn't playing Pärssinen at these games, it's playing Kreider, Brodzinski, Carrick... These are the guys that should sit over the young players, including Pärssinen.

If the Ottawa and Montreal game goes into OT, Rangers are eliminated. Kinda want to just rip off the band-aid quickly at this point and start focusing on the off-season. Why drag this out any longer?

Brady is going to let Nick Suzuki finger poke of doom him, declaring Montreal the winner. Then Brady and Nick will cut a promo together ripping on our team as a bunch of pansies while laughing hysterically.

"See you next season. Lolol!" as both of them wave bye bye.

Well, I don't know why everyone says we can't win a big game.
Does this get us home ice in the playoffs?

I will probably laugh for a good week if they miss the playoffs based on 1 win. Especially looking back over the last couple of weeks at the effort..

I got around to watching this one this morning. And while we managed to put up 9 against a shit team with two shit goaltenders, I still didn't think we played a very good game. We played the same game we've been playing all year, but where a good team wouldn't let us get away with any of it, the Islanders let us get away with everything. We had all kinds of time with the puck. Players were being left unchecked in front of the net. Passing lanes were wide open.

Look at the first goal as an example. Miller passes up a shot from the slot to pass to Zibanejad on the wing. Nine times out of ten this year, that pass gets broken up, or that shot gets blocked or goes wide, and we're complaining about overpassing. But last night, that pass worked and that shot went in. The entire game seemed to go that way.

I’m not saying Berard is going to be some superstar, but how the hell was he not playing more? Hes small, but he can shoot the puck really well.

This is my problem with the coaches we’ve had. It feels like other teams with good coaches would see a player like that and take advantage of his strengths.
Our coaches are either gutless, lazy or some combination. Playing time hasn't been based on merit for a long time in this organization. The fact that Laf and Zibby haven't been benched this entire season tells you all that you need to know.

I agree with the comments above about Berard. As annoyed as I am by the team showing out like that at this stage of futility, I enjoyed seeing that from Berard. Small sample size, but I’ve always said that long shot ceiling for him was a middle six version of Marchand. A guy who maybe has a few seasons up around 60+ points playing consistently in the top six, a few seasons barely hitting 40 playing mostly third line but is useful everywhere in the lineup and brings energy and can compliment/play with everyone. So if he’s playing the Blackwell/Fast role on a bonafide scoring line he’s gonna have a 25 goal 60 point year. If he’s playing on a third line with Trochek and Otthman he’ll be a 40-45 point guy most years. I know he’s still a LONG way from even be a guaranteed 30 point regular, but that’s always been my view of where his highest ceiling is and I stand by that.

What I need right now is for Montreal to pick up at least 1 point tonight, officially eliminating us and then when he can’t use the excuse of “we have to play the best players that give us a chance to win while we’re still in it” I need a third or “fourth” line with some combination of Otthman, Beard, Perrault playing 15+ minutes and getting some PP time. f***, let JT center Berard and Perrault and play big minutes just for the reps.

Is there anyone in the world stupid enough to not think that, KNOWING the team is eliminated you can say to these kids:

These games don’t mean anything, there is NO pressure, go out there and try to make things happen, have fun getting adjusted to the league, we want you in a bigger role next year.

Boost their confidence and give them REPS against pro competition. They’re not going to have their confidence of development ruined if you TELL them that it’s okay to make mistakes and use these three measly, meaningless games as a practice space. And everyone alive knows the best way to get good at something is to do the real thing. A driving simulator will only take you so far, but you’ve gotta get behind the wheel. Target shooting on a controlled range is great, but firing a gun in real life is different. Hitting in the batting cage is tremendous practice but the pressure of an at-bat is different. Let the f***ing kids play.

Words cannot describe how much I hate this team after a performance like this.

Run up the score when it doesn't matter anymore. f*** all the way off.

You’d love to just sit back and enjoy a 9 goal route of the Islanders but it’s honestly almost insulting from the team. Like, all but mathematically eliminated so suddenly the babies don’t have pressure on them anymore? What’s the excuse? What’s the validation. Don’t tell me it’s that the Islanders suck after letting the Flyers embarrass you. This team has managed to be so detestable that even a 9 goal win over the fishsticks is annoying.

TBF this result is less indicative of how good the Rangers were in this game (vs. earlier), and more indicative of how bad the Isles are.

This team doesnt even know how to tank..
As for Berard and others not being played enough
Our last 3 coaches demand good defensive play
They take offensive prospects and play them in the bottom six which have a more defensive role with more def zone starts
So of course they may be on for more goals against
Then they use the excuse of poor defensive play to bench them
