With only five games left in the season, the Winnipeg Jets have arrived in Raleigh, North Carolina to take on the Hurricanes on Thursday night. The Canes are an impressive 49-20-8 and are in fourth place in the entire league. They have a home record of 27-8-4, but are just 5-5-0 in their last ten games. The Jets have found themselves on the outside looking in, with a record of 35-31-11, and it would take a miracle to climb up the standings and make the playoffs. The last ten games have not been so kind to Winnipeg, going 3-6-1 and losing their last three straight. As I posted last game, anyone still watching this team certainly is committed...

...or should be committed...

This GDT will look at all the different types of jerks in the world. First off, we have Steve Martin's version...

...which actually looks like me coming home from a garage sale when I used to drink.... We also have a food version...

giphy.gif

mmm, sounds yummy! And another food version...

And then this...

Well, you get the idea. Anyway, this GDT is to talk about these jerks...

Oops, sorry sorry folks, I've been influenced by the Winnipeg media again. It's actually these jerks...

Yeah, that's better. Ever since Don Cherry called them a "Bunch of Jerks", the Canes have rolled with it and made it their motto...

They've got t-shirts...

On top of that, the fans seem to be on board with this as well...

So if the Carolina Hurricanes are battling for the top spot in the entire league and are called a "Bunch of Jerks", what do we call the Jets?

You got that right... Enjoy the game everyone! Go Jets Go! :hockey:

It's time to stop saying "it would take a miracle" and to start saying "the Jet's season ends in 5 games." Actually, it was time to say that about 2 weeks (a month?) ago (with an adjustment in the number of remaining games of course.) This team was never going to go anything like 16 and 4 to finish the season and grab a spot.

They're actually mathematically eliminated for real this time. The most points the Jets can get is 91 while current WC1, WC2, and 9th place teams have 93, 91, and 89 points respectively. The Jets lose the first tie breaker (regulation wins) with both Dallas (WC1) and Vegas (9th).

Yep. With Vegas playing Dallas next week, Vegas are either going to get to 91 points with regulation win, which would give them 34 RW(first tiebreaker), one more than Jets could possibly have, or an OT game would give Dallas a point, 92, one more than Jets could possibly have...but this is just a math thing, obviously no chance for awhile.

You knew a couple weeks after the Maurice sacking that this team didn't have the heart for a playoff push.

Thanks @macmaroon

This will be a tough one, and despite the missing immediacy of any further excursion to the post season, some of the crew will want to win this.

The offseason will be interesting to say the least.

Next year perhaps we will play lights out (new coach, a system from the current decade) That'd be

Aye my sullen crew, mine crusty eyes open this day and see,
The eastern waterboarded Jets vs. the Jerkhaus ‘Canes;
Brind’Amour weeps, Staal cries and cuffs the snot awee,
The tears glisten bright on Teraveinen’s cheek with overt shame.
And KFC will out-grease Aho (swallowed in the shadow this night),
And then Nikky’s skates will form a blinding show
To the clear day with thy much clearer light,
When to our eyes, the ‘Canes can be had so!
How would our ever hopeful eyes be opened with glee
To regard a healed PLD led line in the living day,
And when in dead night that line skate through Jerk-ed D
Zipping by Anderson and like a bloated carcass pucks flay
All games are bright expectant till I see an overworked Helly,
Cover for the abject Jetting D to grasp the final wheel and celly.

*Resignation

Sacking would imply the Jets actually did something to address the coaching. They did not. Who knew that having worse Paul Maurice is a bad idea?
who knows. he was out of contract and the team hadn't picked up their option.

team direction is likely something that chevy/maurice/chipman discussed almost daily and may have agreed in the summer that they'd part if things weren't improved, they'd part ways. alternatively, they agreed to call it a resignation to preserve maurice's dignity; not uncommon.
