GDT: Game 77 | Senators at Blue Jackets | “We still have 0.3% chance” edition

Winning is great, unfortunately Montreal won. And since it will be playing against Chicago, Habs are most likely 89 points for sure.

Hot take for some people. I think Fabbro would be a great 3rd pairing D on a GOOD team. I think our overall D corps is that weak compared to real competitive teams
If he's left to take care of his own pair I'd agree but playing with talent is a legit skill. His overall game does rely on Zach for sure but if he came back and continued in that role I wouldn't be sad about it. If he leaves we are looking for a stable partner for each of the top 2 pairs which could be a pretty brutal task for Waddell

The real issue is top pair D want top pair money and I don't think he's worth that. Maybe that is a portion of why he hasn't been extended yet.

He's a guy we should keep around if he gets between 2nd/3rd pair money but we should not be building this team around him as a top pair guy alongside Werenski. That guy should be a guy who should be able to hold his own down on the top pair in the event Werenski were to be injured.

I think everyone understands he isn't worth top pair money and by himself isn't that player but we don't know how he and his agent are trying to push it. He went from a guy from inconsistent minutes to a guy playing tons of minutes and looking good next to a Norris candidate.

We just don't know if he's trying to use this to push for his 1 major NHL contract, go home to Vancouver or maybe knows what Columbus is offering and told them he may circle back after getting the wined and dined treatment in FA

this is pretty much what every CBJ team has done since the beginning of time

Start winning once the games don’t matter -> make their draft position worse

If we went 0-9 to finish the year it would help our draft position by a few spots, which would be great. Unfortunately no UFA of any note would be likely willing to sign with such a team, and our own guys might start thinking about greener pastures.

The maxim that good team building is done through the draft has really led people astray. If you want to win you need good players and you need to win to lure good players. And if you can't win then yes you better get them in the draft and wait five years until they can make a difference, but it's almost always better to just win in the first place.

I assume you mean moneywise, right?

Just in terms of the roster I think you can absolutely win a cup with a Werenski - Fabbro top pairing. Fabbro is better than any of Hedman's main D partners were. He's been really excellent at his role and we will miss him terribly.

Guys like Marner aren’t signing here if we go 9-0. Last year we went 4-11 over our last 15, 6-14 over the last 20 and had 1 win in our last 5GP, but still signed Monahan.

Who? Werenski is the only guy that really has control to choose where he goes now.
We know why Monahan signed here, that's not really a fair comparison

True. But of course the circumstances there - of Johnny recruiting Monahan to come here, and there being few or possibly zero other clubs willing to offer this much term to the oft-injured Monahan, and then Monahan greatly outplaying expectations - that's tough to recreate. I don't think the losing will help recruit someone like Gavrikov or say, Brock Nelson. Players want to win.

Small market teams without a history of success HAVE to build through the draft.

Easier found at the top of the draft

Or just trade the picks for players. But the lower a pick is, the greater chance of winning the lottery, but also the more value it holds in a trade for an established player.

maybe, I guess I’m just not so sure we have a realistic chance with those guys regardless. They don’t have many more kicks at the can left, and there are far more safer teams with cap space to join for a cup run.

Players do want to win, it's always an interesting balance of buying a player and selling what you are. Players know CBJ have young talent but they aren't ignorant to our history, it's still probably a tough sell regardless but we can definitely afford to overpay, especially short term. Everyone says they want to win but money is guaranteed, a Cup is not so hopefully Waddell is aggressive with the money we have available
