GDT: Game 73: Red Wings vs b's 8:00 pm et 3/29/25

I don't believe Boston or Wings are tanking, they are just not good enough . I could see Wings could win 2 more games out of 9
Bruins for sure tanking. red wings arent. bruins traded a bunch of their roster for futures. heard on broadcast a chunk of their roster just became NHLers after TDL.

players arent trying to lose but GM surely isnt icing a winning roster.

I thought they played… well?

I mean sure some mistakes but it’s still a W. The only reason I caught the game though was because I was with family for Ramadan: happened to be in ESPN, which I don’t have.

I'm waiting for the day Berggren gets his fair chance on the top6. It's not like Rasmussen is playing lights out at the moment. Would rather see Berggren there.
im a big rasmussen (he does a lot of things berggren cant as well) fan but ya, be nice to see berggren get consistent minutes in the top 9 without being starched every third game. hopefully next season.

Larkin should have the C stripped. Waiting for years now to have him show any semblance of leadership.
I am not a fan of him being the captain either. Problem was that there no other choices around when they decided to give someone the C.

Not sure if it would be the right decision to strip him, because there would certainly be a fallout.

If I’m Yzerman I’m looking into extending D-cat as soon as possible. Get him on a good deal, he will age well imo because he doesn’t really rely on speed

Larkin is a player that had leadership tendencies back to his junior days. He is a player that has ascended within USMNTDP, was a vocal leader as a freshman at U of M according to those around the program, and various times with team USA. He hasn't been given much to lead here, this is a really strange narrative developing. I don't think he is entirely healthy, now that is becoming an issue with Larks in terms of availability and carrying knocks a bunch.

I don't think there is a player to elevate into this role. I also think it was clear McLellan from the time he got here has asked Larkin to do less of what he was being tasked with in this department. Now it is worth noting this approach also got his Sharks and Oilers stars criticized in those stops.

The core players on our team are not really the issue with this team, agree with the winged wheel podcast in terms of we still have tons of lineup slotting issues and depth issues that really are the undoing. When our stars are not carrying the team which happens even with the good teams a quarter of the time, nobody really answers the bell here. That's more on Yzerman than it is on Larkin. The only time during Larkin's tenure where I have questioned Larkin's energy was November to Christmas when he like most of the group had enough of Lalonde and were playing terrible. Outside of that more often than not when he is having problems it is because he is trying to hard. He has never really had dressing room issues and a bunch of his peers around the league sing his praises before games and at events. I think people are really reaching on this. Now in two years if you haven't figured it out we will have to ship him to a contender, which yes he will have a heavy hand in accepting. We have so many other problems in this organization, he really isn't one of them. I would also slap A's permanently on Raymond and Seider. These are the guys now, embrace that.

I never really loved making him captain back when it happened because it wasn't clear he was going to be a really good one and if he was named captain, it was going to be for a long time. With that being said, there was no one else who was obviously captain material at the time and it probably helped to keep him sold on the organization as we slowly climbed out of the bomb crater left behind by Holland.

So he's fine I suppose, but I do like the idea of giving Mo and Ray letters. Ed may also need one, I really like what I'm seeing from him but it's a bit too early to make a definitive judgments.

Raymond. Seider. Edvinsson. Kasper. DeBrincat. Johansson. There is a core of players that are good to great that he absolutely can lead. Except he's invisible in all the games when they get important, currently on year 3 of the exact same late Feb-end season performance from him. That's not leadership. I don't really care what he did at Michigan and the US NTDP. This is the NHL and he's not shown leadership ability in the NHL. Being a leader on absolutely stacked Michigan and USA teams is easy. Being a leader when the team sucks and morale is low is what actually makes someone a leader. Larkin is not that. So far, when push comes to shove, he seems to sulk, rather than rise to the challenge.

I'm not saying that he has no heart, doesn't try, has low effort etc. I'm saying he is not captain material. They're different things. Larkin works hard, wears his heart on his sleeve, cares about winning, all of that. However, the stress/pressure of leading a team (i.e. being "the guy") in high-pressure situations seems to bring him down rather than elevate him. That's not a quality you want in your captain.

I would honestly give the C to Seider. I think he's shown that X factor. If not, then just don't have a captain and at least slap As on Seider and Raymond as others have mentioned. Edvinsson should have an A at least too. He's the only person who actually fights back when guys clown us.

Trading for Bertuzzi back and giving him an A could be a good idea too.

Too bad he can veto any trade. I think we are "stuck" with him. I would ask him to waive it and try to trade him for a similar talent like Clayton Keller

I don't think that's the answer either, and I don't think a team like Utah does that trade anyways since Keller is better and younger.
