GDT: Game #71: Detroit Red @ Utah | 7:00pm MDT | Utah 16, Arizona61

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Is there really a surprise? Detroit played hard and mean all game long .. won the puck battles..wanted it more ..kept the UHc to the outside

UHC didn’t play hard.. gave it away a lot .. allowed Det to take it away a lot ..

Once again no accuracy in passing and shooting

I went to bed after the second, wasn't expecting too much more from the team. It was just one of those games where things seemed off. That's the type of game that can't happen more than once in a month if this team expects to be a playoff contender in the coming years.

On a side note, wouldn't hate seeing Stauber get a few games here. Vejmelka looks a little tired at times.

That ice looked terrible and Detroit played like a beer league team.

With the calls made by the refs they may as well not have come out was so bad.

But mostly utah played like trash and it wasn't fun to watch in an arena more than half full of red wings fans

Also Bear pulling the third line at one point when they were super fired up (and probably going to fight or take a penalty, though McBain vs Ed would have felt good) really killed momentum and was awful to watch.

That's all she wrote boys. Mathematically we are still in the race, but all that is left is what draft position do we get. Oh well, next year, again.
Its been over for a while, another great example, beat TBL and lose to the Deadwings. There are more problems with this roster/coaching/construction then just a young team too.

I agree .. sorta. The team did have a chance, albeit a small one, but they did have a chance, up until losing this game.
I definitely agree there are roster and coaching issues.
For me there are 3 big issues with this teams play… no particular order

1) they dont do well when under a good forecheck…. lots of turnovers as a result

2) although they have played tenacious team defense at times ( certainly the mcbain line has been good the last few in this regard) they dont play it nearly consistently enough

3) Veggie has some good games, but overall, better goalie play is needed

There might be a size issue as well; crashing the net hard is something we dont see enough of.

Anyways, the season has been, I think, a step forward, but there is a ways to go.

BA and AT are safe going into next year when playoffs are expected. The real pressure starts then.

If I'm Ryan Smith and I feel the rebuild needs to go faster, I'd tell BA my new expectations and let him go to work long before I'd consider replacing him. I've liked his trades, his draft picks, and the contracts he has given out. Seems he's been both smart and saavy. Nothing worth replacing him over and I'm sure he can adapt to whatever Smith wants. Even being more aggressive with trading assets.

Only reason to replace him (IMO) would be just because other GMs have been fired in the past, which doesn't automatically make it the right decision here. I still like where we're at and the direction the team is headed. I'm ok with his timeline as long as taking our time and "doing it right" means we're going on deep playoff runs for 10 years when it's over, like Tampa Bay.

In regards to AT, I'm torn. Really torn. The players seem to love him and he seems to be a good developmental coach. Maybe AT would be good with But and Sim like he has been with all the other young guys? I just don't know. I do get the feeling that AT will not be the type of coach we need 2 years from now, just not sure about next season.

BA and Bear both should be fired before draft. We had a chance to do something magical this year. Just because BA wanted to sandbag this year doesn't mean his boss or owner wanted this mess.

How's the weather down there in Crusty Rica?

I'm glad that next season we can all be on the same page regarding playoff expectations. Next year is THE year.

Good thing the weather is great. It will be interesting to see who survives. With the players extensions looks like BA and Bear are given another free year. But next year they better be held accountable :)

Ryan smith has said he hires who he thinks is the best for a job, then let's them do it. So far BA is his man and I see no excuse to fire him. Same goes for AT, for the moment. BA like's AT, so I would think he is safe for now.

You don't know what you are talking about. Sorry, but you are so far off base here. In my opinion anyway. I thought the rebuild is behind by one year, but there is a good chance I'm wrong. Look around the league and you see other rebuilding teams struggle to get over the hump and get into the playoffs. It's not easy. I think once you get there it's easier to maintain that status for a number of reasons.

Even BA agrees with us on this board that next year that is the expectation. Hear that AT and team.

Earlier in the season UHC was compared to DET's rebuild and used as an example of why UHC is behind in theirs. I guess DET was in a playoff spot back then. But now...

DET - .507
UHC - .528

DET didn't do better over the entire season afterall. Playoffs not likely.
