Post-Game Talk: Game 71: B's come up empty in San Jose losing 3-2 in regulation

I'm also pretty down on Hayes, I'm much more down on Connolly.

Sweeney will fix things. He must know he needs a 3rd line winger.

I'd love to see Frank V playing with 39 and 51 and Hayes or Connolly fighting for 4th line minutes.

I suggest anyone missing Reilly Smith think back to last year when he signed that contract and subsequently was benched should go read those Smith threads

soft as a babies butt

also while you are taking a break thru the Reilly Smith beatdown on HF Boards (its pretty brutal 10 times more dislike than Hayes is getting here)

Fantasy wise I'd take Smith but reality he was a bad fit for this team

go watch the Brad Marchand videos this summer and I can tell you if you cant figure it out he was talking about Smith

Removing him was addition by subtraction

Chiarelli shoved Smith down that teams throat to justify the Seguin deal and overpaid him hoping:amazed: the security would help him

to be fair, going by the opinions of most HFBoards posters is not exactly how I would settle this. Just because Smith was getting a lot of hate on this board doesn't make it correct

I respect your opinion and I acknowledge in the Hayes thread that there were obviously personality reasons at play for the trade, but it drives me nuts to see fans burying Smith as if he's Jordan Caron when he's objectively better than Hayes & Connolly

Smith was not working out here and then Sweeney had the chance to trade the Savard contract. Most of us thought Hayes would flourish in his hometown - that hasn't happened.

Now why the Bruins decided to fly Vatrano to San Jose to watch the game and then send him back to Providence without actually activating him is a

I hope we can grab a point or two in the SoCal games Friday and Saturday. The Ducks losing at home tonight doesn't help our cause at all as they will be fired up on Friday.
The Kings game on Saturday will be even tougher.

He was there to play for Krejci if he couldn't go

I know that but given what he has done in Providence since being sent down why not get him out there and see if there is a fit.

Roster limit.
They would had to waive one of Morrow, Trotman, or Randell.

Exactly, Smith is a better shooter, playmaker, skater, puck handler, and his hockey IQ is much higher. I'm not saying he should have stayed on the 37-63 line but he would be far better playing with Spooner and Beleskey... then maybe that line would be a threat to score... unlike now with a plug like Hayes on it

I agree with this. Smith IMO is overall a better player than Hayes, but Smith also wasn't a key cog in the Bruins organization and frankly I don't think the team is significantly harmed by him not being here.

But keep in mind he wasn't what the team needed on the first/second line (and Hayes wasn't it either-although a case could be made that he would be more productive playing where Hayes is playing now) and his trade was also about getting Savard cap hit off the books. Also will point out that Smith had an excellent first season here then the production fell and fell hard-maybe it was a blip in his trajectory or maybe he will be a player who plays inconsistently. I don't care. I don't think the team needs him or really misses him even if in the end Hayes isn't what the team needs either.

my opinion... not all 23 players will be all stars... some will be works in progress. some will eventually fail.

we needed some bigger forwards that had a scoring touch and could be tougher to play against then guys like riley smith were for us. I'm not sure either Connolly or hayes will eventually become legitimate top 6 players but I am prepared to say we don't have room for both of them.

I have no strong feelings which one we keep... I would keep the one that has the least trade value. I'm not really committed to playing both in the playoffs. id probably try to bench these guys and light a fire under one of them.

I think either guy might develop into a decent player... but right now they don't help us a lot and having 2 guys in the lineup that don't help a lot leaves us with a hole I would prefer to see fixed with another body

I agree 100% that their isn't room for both Connolly and Hayes next season.

But for me the choice of who to keep is easy and it's Connolly by a wide margin. He's more physical, better with the puck, better defensively , better fit in Claude's system, neither are world beaters but Connolly is a solid bottom 2 line grinding RW which at his cap hit isn't bad at all. Hayes I'm not sure what he is besides a waste of a roster spot many nights.

To be fair, you have absolutely 0 proof that Reilly Smith is the player they were referring to and have never been inside that locker room. Could have been any of the many players that left this team after last season. If you're not impressed with Smith holding his own in that fight, you're kidding yourself. Anders Lee is 6'3" 228 while Smith is 6' 185. I included the Jimmy Hayes fight because it was hilarious, not to prove he's a worse fighter or softer than Smith. If you actually watch Hayes play, he plays softer than Charmin. He's 6'5" 215 but sure as hell doesn't play like it. You can say that's not his game to play a tough physical game but then what else does he provide? Offense? Barely. Good defensive play? Ha no. The guy is a plug and makes just as many mistakes if not more than Smith. My point isn't that Smith is tougher than Hayes.. He just brings a hell of a lot more to the table.

And again, your point by showing those two fights is like looking outside, seeing it is raining and telling everyone it rains everyday. Its so bad, you might want to invest some time watching a debate team before you throw around terrible analogies again.

There's very good indicators its Smith and Lucic. Smith was nonexistant last year and you can't find the one video to prove me wrong either. But that does not matter, none of your rants about Smith matters. Smith is gone and he is not walking back through the doors. It was a good and necessary trade at the time. Your almighty perfect 20/20 glasses notwithstanding.

I'm not a fan if Hayes, he's been awful. But he doesn't nor ever had Smith's skill set either, no one should disagree with that. But you're acting like he was replacing Smith's role which he wasn't. He was brought in to fill out a severally lacking bottom 6 depth, the B's had. This is not a video game, you can't load up a team with goal scorers and call it good. I understand the natural inclination to outright compare Smith to Hayes because of the trade but thats not fair to Hayes whom was not brought in to replace Smith's role. Connolly was supposed to do that and has failed.

I think smith is a very strong possibility as far as marchys comments. I would be totally stunned if lucic was anywhere in his mind.

Personally I'd like to see Stempniak extended for another season and he play on the 3rd line. He can play a Kelly role with Spooner, with more speed and offensive IQ.

Stempniak is the 15th leading RW scorer.

More points than Kessel, Neil, Oshie, Eberle.

3rd line duty seems a little low for a man of his talents.

yeah but the same could be said of Spooner who probably isn't cracking the top 6 any time soon.

maybe if he went with his teammates to Vegas after the final game and did something crazy with Marchand he might have felt more a part of the team

He was just a bad fit to me
