3-3-1 this year. Last year, 0-7.

It's a start.

It's a start? Yeah, it's a GREAT start. Look at who we have played, how some of our better players are playing bad, and a couple of guys we counted on not even on the team right now. Our special teams and goaltending (defense) has been really good. We are in good shape if we can improve our 5 vs 5 offense a little more.

the two shutouts being on the back end of a back to back is the real astonishing stat for me this year...

Jackets are playing quicker (nod to Todd Richards) and keeping the puck out of the back of the net. The playing quicker is a by product of our D making good passes and getting the puck up the ice. One telling stat I watch is the GF-GA. After last night we're on the positive side of the ledger. A plus GF-GA usually translates into a playoff spot. Pittsburgh is currently an aberration IMHO. One thing I really like about our GF-GA number is that since we're not scoring alot of goals and we've got a + number it means we're decent defensively. Last point... While watching last nights game I saw our SA/G is trending down to the league average (approx 30 SA/G). This is really encouraging. My asks moving forward would be for us to: 1) improve our cycle game in the opponents zone (not a Torts strength) 2) Crash the net more (did that last night).

General trend is good right now.

Are you sure that when they are 'playing quicker' they are not actually playing slower?

It's definitely been lagging.

Of the 11 players with 50 or more minutes at 5 on 5:

Good at evens so far:

Hartnell
Saad
Foligno

Karlsson
Anderson (these two very good considering the defensive focus)

Not good at evens so far:

Wennberg
Gagner
Atkinson (these three are zero or 1 points, basically just scoring on the PP)

Calvert
Dubinsky
Jenner (all donuts)

Last night's lines were good, but you can tell that there are still guys not clicking.

Some things we know that work:

Saad - - Foligno
Hartnell - Wennberg -
Calvert - Dubinsky - Anderson
- Sedlak - Gagner

So I'd try:

Saad - Karlsson - Foligno
Hartnell - Wennberg - Atkinson
Calvert - Dubinsky - Anderson
Jenner - Sedlak - Gagner

Not at all, To me the puck is getting up the ice and into the zone alot more quickly and efficiently. Don't like what happens once it gets there; but that's another story. You're not thinking so??

5 points out of this road trip is awesome

very true. I was hoping for at least a split but realistically I didn't believe they'd get any more than 2

I think if anyone were offered 3-3-1 for October when the schedules came out we would've taken it, no question.

Only disturbing stat I've seen is that Bob is third in shots he had to stop. About 35 or 36 a game if I remember correctly.

Had the opportunity to stay up and watch all 3 games from the coast this week - and the Dallas game for that matter. I agree with many of the sentiments expressed above.

I had the following over arching thoughts headed into the season;

- This team is so young it could look very Jekyll and Hyde at times. Those youthful times, both good and bad, might begin to even themselves out by mid-point (January 2017)
- The defense will be a microcosm of that as well. It should only be a question of when they come together and how high the upside is.
- We should get a real test of John Tortrella's coaching ability when we get to watch the physical and mental strength of this team in the 19 back-to back's (one more than their league leading 18 last year). Did the "grind them into submission training camp" really work?
- Does Bobrovsky have the ability to recover from the injuries and lack luster performances and string together some long stretches of very solid play? Does the improved defense (point #2) begin to slow down the shots and scoring chances Bob has to face?
- Can this team just hang around and stay close during the first 2 months of the season given the huge number of last years playoff teams they will will face (6-1 in October and 10-4 in November)?

So what we know so far - the CBJ are in a totally different place after 7 games this year than last year. The youth has been on display as expected, both good and bad. The defense seems to be coming together quicker then I expected. Two shutout's in both 2nd end of B2B's so far is VERY promising. Yes, this team has the ability to hang around until January 1st, when only 1 of their final 47 games is outside the Eastern Time Zone .

Congratulations Blue Jackets on an October that was good enough. At this point, I will take good enough and continue to let this team come together.

This team came out to play. That first period was one of the best I've seen in a long time. The more I see Werneski the more he reminds me of Bobby Orr. Yes I know that is a jaw dropping comparison but I remember when Orr came into the league and there are a lot of similarities.

Great road trip for such a young team.

If true.. if Werenski has a little Orr in him, than we have a chance to change the direction of the entire organ-i-zation. I have thought this myself but would not have uttered the statement. Now that the cat is out of the bag - I gotta say this guy is just so calming. During transition when things could get out of control seeing him steadily bring the puck into the attack zone and his passing, or shot being right on the mark.

My Dad used to say that point when the defense pinches to meet you at the blue line is the trigger for the whole entry into the zone. That is the point you need calmness and control. Werenski has calmness & control - Protect your brother Seth they are going to try and take him out.

I'll add that this IS a young team with talented youth. They should only get better as the season rolls along. The veterans are the wild card.

IF we can maintain our current play.. and Dubi/Boone/Hartnell get going... man, I'll be excited.

2-1-1 west coast road trip, and Bob 2 shutouts!

I sure hope that the issue with Bob's injury history was solved with his 17 pound weight loss otherwise we're just asking for another long term injury with the work load we are giving him.

No reason to be playing him 3 in 4 nights or 5 games in 8 nights. We're not all the bright as a franchise.

No kidding.

On the other hand Torts probably wants to ride the hot hand because he isn't sure of McE so that brings us right back to your point.

Not that it has anything to do with the decision of how often to play him, but Bob would probably play 7 games in 7 nights if he could.

Most teams sacrifice their backups to the more difficult game in a back-to-back, it's nothing unusual. Time for our coaches to start looking at the big picture. Bob hasn't really proven that you can ride him that hard. You want him healthy the whole season if you can pull it off, so play it smart.
