GDT: Game #68: Utah @ Edmonton | 7:00pm MDT | ESPN, SN1, TVAS

Just a horrible day all around for the Utah HC. Calgary, St. Louis, Seattle and Vancouver all won as well. I'm afraid this might've sunk our playoff hopes for this season.
These games happen to young teams. 14 games left. If the season ended today I think I would be happy. I expected Utah to be a bubble team last year and a playoff team this year, so maybe I'm off by a year. Utah still has a ways to go, but BA expects the playoffs next year so let's see how AT and the team responds. The Jets just got spanked by the Canucks, who Utah just beat, if that makes anyone feel better. :)

They happen, but not to young playoff teams, not at this time of year. They got spanked a few weeks ago like this, its unacceptable. If we lost 4-2 or 3-1, thats ok, not a blow out like this in game 68 of the season. There are bigger underlying issues, in something, coaching, team construction, etc...not sure what it is, maybe we just aren't really close to being a playoff team.

I think I would be happy as well. The young guys have definitely taken a step forward so far this season, I'm really hoping they can take another step for next season. It'd be easier if they were more defined in their roles going forward.

I still think they're extremely young. They're one of the youngest teams in the league (would be even younger if you excluded some of the nightly scratches) so the ups and downs are going to be volatile this season. The hope is that with another year of maturation under their belts, next season shouldn't have these major ups and downs.

The back end is still a work in progress, only two guys from last years defensive corps are still around so I'm sure there's still some meshing players are doing. Having Durzi and Marino missing a large chunk of the season certainly doesn't help the overall cohesiveness.

If they come out with their pants on fire Thursday against Buffalo I think they'll be fine. If they come out flat, I'm worried the season might be over.

I'm finding it easier to accept failure, with it being such a grand failure.
If we would've fallen behind (out?) in the playoff race due to an unlucky bounce it would be harder to swallow.

By no means are we out of the race. However....if we end up missing the playoffs by a couple of points we may look back at this game as the moment our hopes really weakened.

Oh, now they are a playoff team? Your post makes no sense, at all. The Jets just got spanked by Vancouver last night, the Blues spanked the Wild 5-1 a few nights ago, Pittsburgh spanked the Devils 7-3 a few nights ago as well. All those teams that got spanked are in the playoffs, one is the top team in the NHL.

I watched most of the game last night. My impression was Edmonton was much faster - faster to shoot, faster to pass, and faster to a loose puck ( not mention mcdavid’s speed boots). I’ve seen Utah play good this season, many times, but never as good as Edmonton looked last night. It was only 1 game, but I was left thinking that this team is a long way from even sort of contending.

I didn't watch those games, but: The Jets can take a night off, won't effect them making the playoffs, could have been bad goal tending too, the Blues are on fire and one of the best NHL teams last 10 games. Oilers were struggling to score until they played us. We stunk last night, and you can't blame the goal tending, not sure what it is, but its not just, "oh well we had an off night".

To put it in perspective now, Vancouver is on pace for 91 points, for us to get 92 points, we need to get 75% of the available points 21/28 to barely make the playoffs. The good news is that if we do that, we will be on fire, the reality is, this team likely gets 14 more points or 1/2 and we finish with 85 points. But hey, the games are "meaningful" now, except for last nights of course:)

I was really hoping we would catch some breaks and lightening in a bottle this year.

We are only in this tight playoff race because BA didn't do his job and wanted this next man up bull shit. I hope this team can prove him wrong and he gets a very crappy draft pick. Love to see us drafting 20 to 24. It's where we should be.

Man I feel so much better now. Sorry about the rant but it needed to be said.

If you think that game wasn’t meaningful and they didn’t learn anything from it, I do t know what to tell you.
