Games to watch tommarrow:
Philadelphia vs Pittsburgh- Need the Peinguins to win
Toronto vs Washington- Need the Maple Leafs to win
Edmonton vs Carolina- Carolina is still in the race so need to root for the Oilers to win
San Jose vs New York Rangers- Root for the Sharks to beat the Rangers in regulation.
Montrel vs Buffalo- Root for Buffalo in case we don't make the top 3
Detroit Vs Chicago- Root for the Blackhawks for same reason above
Where am I wrong?

Its tomorrow.. other than that the Sabres can't beat their grandma..

The rest is good... ;)

The bolded is the only tossup.

Washington is unknown as a threat to Columbus; they're four points back, but have played one additional game and are facing a huge uphill battle in R/OT wins against Columbus. They're also about to embark on a string of four games against Western opponents after Toronto.

Meanwhile, it's a ferocious fight over in the Atlantic, with both wild cards and the #9 team all being from that division. A Washington regulation win tomorrow would knock Toronto down into the wild cards (pushing Montreal up), but would mean that Toronto and Columbus would be tied in possible points (106). This would create a very small cushion for the CBJ without providing any real boost to a rival.

So there's arguments to be had for rooting for either team. But really, the only thing that we're all rooting for with that game is a regulation outcome.

CBJ are 4 points back of Toronto and have a game in hand. Washington trails CBJ by 4 points and have played one more game. Personally I hope Washington wins and its not a 3 point game. Dare to dream about the #3 seed?

There is no #3 seed per se. The only way Toronto knocks us out of a spot is if they get the last wild card at our expense. Washington can knock us out of 2nd or 3rd in the Metro or the wildcard so its go Toronto.

Right, the best thing we can possibly get is 2nd in the Metro and more points than the three Atlantic teams so we get home-ice advantage if we have to play Toronto, TB, or Montreal in a later round. But the 2nd in the Metro is the real gem.

There's definitely a #3 seed. It's what we'll probably end up with when it's all said and done.

I was referring to a #3 seed in the conference which I believe is the context in which the original poster was referring to. yes there is a #3 seed; actually there are 4 #3 seeds if you want to really get technical about this.

I have no idea what you are talking about. For seeding; there are 2. One in the East and one in the West. There are 4 teams that finish third in their division; which doesn't have a direct relation to seeding. All that means that is that you aren't one of the top 2 or bottom 2 seeds.

I haven't looked to see if finishing second in the division means you are either a #3 or #4 seed. I suspect that you might be about to fall to #5.

Finishing 3rd in your division means you've got the 3rd seed. It's not conference based anymore.

No. If a wild card crosses divisions they stay there. Winner of the 2-3 plays the winner of the #1-wc series regardless of where the wild card came from.

So then to my understanding, if we get a #2 or #3 Metro playoff spot it doesn't matter where we finish relative to TB, Montreal, and Toronto except for determining who gets home-ice advantage should we face one of those teams later in the playoffs.

If we stay in the #2 -#3 range in the Metro our most likely playoff opponents by round are
1st round = Rangers or Flyers
2nd = Penguins
3rd = Bruins

I see that a doctoral candidate understands my posts. I am flattered.

Back at you.

And just to be ornery, there is only one team that finishes third in their division; in total there are 4 third place finishers, one in each division.

XM Radio was saying earlier in the week how there may be some whining going on under new playoff format when some top teams have to meet in first round. Personally, I like the idea of building rivalries through the divisional seeding and it may benefit CBJ this year :). As a hypothetical, if final standings were something like:

1. Boston 108 points
2 Pittsburgh 107 points
3. Toronto 100 points
4. Montreal 99 points
5. Tampa 98 points
6. Detroit 97 points
7. New York Rangers 94 points
8. Columbus 93 points

The "old" conference seeding would have:
1)Boston vs 8)Columbus
2)Pittsburgh vs 7)New York
3)Toronto vs 6)Detroit
4)Montreal vs 5)Tampa

Now, would be:
A) Boston vs Detroit
B) Toronto vs Montreal

C) Pittsburgh vs Tampa
D) New York vs Columbus

Winner A vs Winner B
Winner C vs Winner D

Although a hypothetical, you'd eliminate either the 3rd or 4th best team in Conference in round one (Toronto vs. Montreal) and Montreal wouldn't get home ice advantage. You could have Pittsburgh facing a tougher Tampa team (5th overall) instead of the 7th overall Rangers. And, 7th overall Rangers get home ice for first round against an 8th best overall Blue Jackets.
