Poke check opens up the five hole. You have to reach across your body to do so if you want to try and make the poke check without leaving a massive 5 hole. Low percentage at that stage and if he misses looks like a complete idiot. Best chance was to try and play it like he did and he missed. Not the best play, not the worst.
