So is this in addition to his undisclosed injury? Or is this what the undisclosed injury is?
It appears they usually find it while doing other diagnostics. So it seems that this may be a secondary issue. Hopefully not.

I'm no doctor but isn't the spleen something that can be removed? Didn't that happen to Hellebuyck?

Yeah but looking it up :

"Hellebuyck was told to take two months off following the surgery, but he was back on ice after one. He wasn’t about to miss tryouts for the American world junior team after receiving an unexpected invite. His mobility was compromised and he didn’t make the roster, but one coach pulled Chuck aside and told him: “I don’t know how we didn’t see your son before.” Hellebuyck was at last on USA Hockey’s radar."

So he might be out for the season if they operate, might try radiation. Shitty news

I wouldn't assume they will or have to remove the spleen. Couple seconds of doctor Google indicates it might be a symptom of a different problem where, if treated successfully, the spleen could go back to normal on its own,

Vilardi may require a splenectomy which will put him on the self for at least 6 weeks and is to avoid any contact sports. He may be not back at all this season including the playoffs which is unfortunate.

Sounds like it could be a million different things causing his issue. Hopefully just some rando infection that goes away quickly:

In many cases, the spleen will return to normal size as the underlying condition improves. Some conditions, such as transient infections, may go away by themselves. Your provider may treat other conditions with medication, blood treatments or surgery. Some have no cure.
