I think it may be tied into the Miller suspension.

Thats the only explanation I can think of.

I guess but I don't see how. The rule just says if you are unable to dress 18+2, which we were last night, then you're eligible for an emergency recall. Miller is suspended so he's ineligible to play and Lindgren is injured so he can't play. I don't know why a suspension would have anything to do with it, he's ineligible to play.

Most likely it's because the Rangers had sufficient cap space going into the day to recall players so they wouldn't have to play shorthanded. But the team used up that cap space to trade for Kane.

It's funny how the NYR playing 16 skaters is "shenanigans" while other teams waiting to announce injuries / LTIR until most financially beneficial is no harm no foul
