The team was so bad in 17-18 that they formally announced a rebuild, and when you think about it, they basically kept that core in tact (Kreider, Zibanejad, got back JT Miller, replaced Girardi with a worse Girardi) except they added Panarin and Fox, and downgraded at many other spots in the lineup (Zucc to Laf, Grabner scoring 30 goals to a bunch of guys who don't do that, arguably Hayes to Trocheck).

Rebuilds usually mean swapping older assets for long term ones. But as we never tire of pointing out (and rightfully so) … hockey is different here. There was also lots of quit on that rebuild.

He's a bit of a prick to his teammates at the rink but Mark Messier borderline bullied his teammates. He stuck around.

FWIW, you need to look at this from a business lens. They made the ECF twice and CLEANED UP on ticket, concession, and merch revenue. They even bankrupted MSG Networks!
The letter and the subsequent years were a resounding success. Just look at the SPHERE in Vegas!

Personally I think JT should be the captain. We have no captain, thats not right. We need someone in the locker room thats in charge and Trocheck is just too nice of a guy. I cant picture him holding someones feet to the fire he'd be the perfect right hand man to JT though. The team has potential and someone needs to rile them up. The team is just too soft, they need to harden the f*** up and we need better coaching too and a captain.

Never even tries to cut in or attack the defenseman. Curls into a ball and serves a softee into the corner and then refuses to skate to make himself available.
Only 4 teams have scored first less than the Rangers this year, and 2 of those 4 are only 1 game behind us, while another is 2. The worst team in the league is 4 behind us.
That’s a problem that has persisted with this core for at least 5 years. They start games like they are on Valium IVs before each game.
The team just isn’t good enough. I’m not picking on any player, but literally no one should be untouchable. If someone wanted to give you 4 great assets for Fox or a few for Laf, you have to entertain it. There’s nothing about this team that we should be married to. Fox probably has a better second half of his career playing elsewhere than he will here. This place is the complacency capital of comfort and cushiness. Everyone falls off here. I do think Fox lacks certain attributes you ideally want your best player to have; I also acknowledge that he’s our best player. It isn’t that I have something against him. I just don’t think that anyone here is TOO good to move, or that we’re going anywhere in the next few years whether we have a top 10 Dman on the roster or not. It wouldn’t matter if he was Makar. I’d be way more entertained nightly, but my stance would probably be the same - his career is going to be wasted here and we can probably give ourselves a better future, and expedite the arrival of that future, by cashing that chip in before it loses value via NMC control. It’s not a grudge against the player. This team needs a full reset. Not a quarter reset. A full reset.

If you clear the deck and actually create space for them I'd much rather see people compete for jobs than what ever the f*** the vet core is doing right now.
There are plenty of players that play soft as shit and don't get traded. Acting like Messier is the far more likely reason. EP is even softer and he stayed, btw.
Unless something completely unexpected happens, JT should be Captain next year for sure. But they need to unload Zib, have Kreider retire somehow, figure out how to get rid of Lindgren, and shelf Fox for like 10 months.
Otherwise naming him Captain does really nothing. This team is god awful.

He was always Vancouver’s best player in the playoffs according to their fans. Plays top players hard. It was a good deal for the rangers regardless of how this season has gone

He hasn't done that for a while. He's legitimately been the definition of a perimeter player for over a calendar year now.
Whether its because he's being hampered by a knee thing or not I have no idea, but he's basically been playoff Panarin both in the post season and regular season since signing his extension.
