that might be part of it, sure. But that doesn't explain the lack of scoring from our top 6 wingers this year, Arvidsson, RNH, Pod, Henrique, C. Brown all didn't choose to not score for the whole season because they don't have trust in our goalies. Our PK didn't go into the toilet over the last month because they don't trust our goalies. Bouch didn't decide to have a rollercoaster season of bad giveaways because he gave up on our goalies.
This team is able to hide many issues, and look better, with a better W/L record because of 97 and 29. Those guys win games, basically by themselves sometimes. Is this team bad, other than 97 and 29? no, but they aren't nearly as good as they think they are.
McDavid absolutely didn’t look fine. He had moments of great where he pushed himself but he looked awful for stretches too. He was awful for the first 40 in the final.Looked fine in the tournament
lots of blame to go around for sure, i'm not saying that management didn't fail in the summer. But, to say the only thing they messed up on was goaltending is crazy. Ya, not improving in net, has been a fail. but it's not just a fail because they chose forwards over goalies or D, it's also a huge fail because of who they chose as the upgrades, because those additions have been huge disappointments. Oilers management has had many misses since game 7 against FLA.The goalies they have are basically a non-starter for a Cup, the management having a brutal off-season on top of that just adds to the pile of shit.
The summer was clearly their big “upgrade the forwards” move and they spent 10 million in cap to get nothing done but set themselves up to have two young players offer sheeted.
So now because they got nothing done in the summer, they are behind the 8 ball while massive problems in net remain.
That’s called awful management and scouting.
Mc Dave played alot better in the tourneyHe was only a +1 despite 5 points in the 4N. His defensive game has been a mess for a solid calendar month already.
No shit.Sorry Sobeys, flames fans aren't my family
Mc Dave played alot better in the tourney
Had jump he hadn't had most of season
He's been a real bright spot but his buddy Mc-D looks tired/frustrated/angered or perhaps all three. I can't blame him for being frustrated but some nights his efforts have been substandard.I'm only watching to see if Leon can add to his goal total.
It doesn’t even necessarily need to be a better goalie. It does though - if you don't trust your goaltender you second guess everything. You don't play with as much creativity. You hesitate. You cheat for defense.
This leads to you defending more in general, and it keeps to you not generating as much on your chances because you are worried if you turn it over, it goes in your net every single time.
Leeds to you just generally gripping your stick and not playing loose and on instinct.
A McDavid and a Draisaitl can score through that, because they're generational talents. A Hyman, Nuge, RV, Skinner, etc? They'll be snake bitten.
There's also a huge psychological boost when your goalie keeps you in a game - you know you let him down and that he deserves better, you go out and execute for him in the key moments of the game. If your goalie just let's everything in, you give up, the games over, go next.
It's like I said - when teams with atrocious goaltending upgrade their goaltender their entire game gets better. The AVS this year generate 0.7 more xGF per game since acquiring Blackwood, and allow 0.6 less xGA. And you know - they statistically get the actual saves. And again - this happens every time teams with bad goaltending get better goaltenders.
That’s tight checking high level hockey. At the end of the day he was very consistent. He either scored or set up the opening goal in every game except the last one where he ended up scoring the OT game winner. He had a great tournament.McDavid absolutely didn’t look fine. He had moments of great where he pushed himself but he looked awful for stretches too. He was awful for the first 40 in the final.
He looked good early in games and then pretty much invisible the rest of the way which is pretty much how he’s been here most of the year.He looked fine playing for Canada. His give-a-shit meter is at an all-time low. Quite pathetic, really.
