Have they ever actually clarified the difference between when it's "intent to blow" and you're screwed and when it's a "continuation" and it counts because they would have scored anyway? Because it still seems like they just do whatever they're feeling like.

Then you get into situations where guys are whacking the goalie after the whistles because you can't rely on the whistle or goal horn. No, the whistle goes, the play is dead unless the guy is midshot or something

It gets even more confusing because they don't actually blow the whistle on a goal. they point at the net.

It definitely feels like they do whatever the heck they want.

The guy that flips the red light on is an official. That ref doesn't have a whistle. He has a light and a really loud horn.

Is he? I thought the red light was an arena guy once they got rid of the goal judges in the box behind the net.

EDIT: You're right. after doing some internetting it looks like goal judges were moved in seats behind the goal or could be moved to the press box for video review, but are still the ones flipping the light.

I guess I never really thought about it, and how it would be a terrible idea to leave it in the hands of an arena employee.

Agreed. The NHL will stop a game for 5 minutes to see if a guy was a millimeter offside 30 seconds before a goal was scored, but introduce even more ambiguity into the game with "continuation calls." And in my opinion also by extending the blueline as a vertical plane so a player no longer has to have his skate on the ice.
