If the Jacobs are willing to take a DNQ then that is comforting. Much as it will suck in the short term, if the team is looking bound to fall short then you may as well lean into that as much as you can and take advantage, including potentially the lottery as you said. Been a while since the Bruins have been in a position to have these sorts of options, so make the most of it.

I think Marchand has mostly done the best he can as captain in difficult circumstances, despite some limitations. He lacks support and it is never easy to be the guy in charge when an era of greatness (or perhaps in this case, near greatness) inevitably comes to an end. He hasn't been able to arrest the decline but I'm not sure anyone could have. Frustration and trying too hard have probably led to some errors but they are understandable. With that said, is he the right guy to captain the team next year? That's also difficult. It could well be time to move on, even if he's not dealt, But there are no really good candidates to replace him. McAvoy would be the frontrunner but I am not convinced that is a great idea. One of many questions that need to be answered going forwards.

Sacco as you say is definitely gone and he knows it. On balance I would probably prefer to see a fresh face and perspective in the GM chair too, but I appreciate that Sweeney's overall record is arguably good enough to fairly earn him the chance to rectify the errors of the last 8 months. So be it. Can only hope he gets more things right this time. If he doesn't, then his own departure really will be assured, and Neely's too.

If Brad isn't back next year, the captaincy has to go to Pastrnak, not because he's the team's best player but because I think he is a better leader type then McAvoy. When he dropped the gloves last year in the playoffs with Tkachuk, that sealed the deal for me.

I don't think ownership has forgiven Marchand's mistake in Game 7 of the SCF in 2019.

You had to be inside TD Garden to understand how deflating that second St. Louis goal was. @Ladyfan @Kate08 can tell you the crowd became scared and it affected the team.

But I love Brad! There are MANY games the Bs would have lost if it were not for Brad. He is not the bad guy.

that's the philosiphy of this ownership and management group. Get in, get 3-4 homes games. Only standard, which really isn't a standard

Guy can't hold Chara's or Bergeron's jock as a captain. If someone is offering a 1 I ditch him.

Mike Sullivan next coach.
Not many current captains are close to Chara and Bergeron either to be fair. Crosby and...?? Add in the abysmal roster Sweeney gave Marchand to work with and difficult to blame Marchand as well.

Seriously you and everyone else can f*** off with this Marchand bad penalty shot. He did NOTHING wrong and Miller should have been in the box with him for yanking his helmet off and pushing him into the goalie. Your blind hatred towards Marchand is pathetic and sad.

Get the f*** over 2019.
Marchand has been an undisciplined fool lately. Hardly captain material. When do you remember Chara or Bergeron being lambasted on the bench due to lack of effort or benched for stupid decisions? Time for him to go

@Alicat I have NO HATE towards Brad

I also understand he is the best asset Sweeney has to make a deal for the future,

:banghead:
100% someone will pay a first plus for him. Teams out of the play-off structure rebuild doing just this

The team has flaws, no doubt about it. But I think a better coaching staff could be getting more out of this group. Wouldn't turn them into a contender, but they'd be in a better position than they are right now.

I felt the decision to go with Swayman tonight was a lay-up, an easy decision. But nope, let analytics rule the day.

Same with their obsession with the face-off guy always on their strong side. It's gone overboard. Claiming the reason for keeping McAvoy on PP was zone entries, to heck with actual PP production. Rolling the same PP 1 unit since the start of the season to no success.

It's been musical chairs with Lines 2/3/4. Guys playing wing one day, center the next. Constant changing of D-pairings. Always using some bull-shit make-shift line coming out of special teams situations.

Rarely calling time-outs. Has Sacco gotten mad even once since taking over. Just gutless analytic driven coaching.
“Claiming the reason for keeping McAvoy on PP was zone entries, to heck with actual PP production.”
McAvoy skates to the red line and sends it back to the bruins zone. But I’m with you, time to switch up all the coaches it will make a difference.

In all fairness, do you expect any GM to come out and tell the public what he's about to do? Of course not. The other thing is just what kind of return would the B's expect from all these ( not Pasta) underperforming players? I can't imagine they fetch much.
Bruins run a tight ship unless it's discounting the value of their players

@Aussie Bruin, I am back home after an uneventful drive back.

Ownership will accept a DNQ this season because the Celtics should keep TD Garden humming into June. The key now is for the Bruins to fall into the bottom 11 and have a chance with the lottery.

The biggest problem is Marchand, and his taking a bad penalty tonight can't be ignored.

I think Sweeney is safe but Sacco will be fired and the B's will look at who becomes available.
What do you think it would take for ownership to make a change in the front office? If and when they fire Sacco, these guys will be moving onto coach #5. Seems like an awfully long leash given their lack of playoff success. Would back to back DNQ’s do it?

Hope there's some buyers. The 'tradable' players on the B's aren't really worth much.
They are all tradeable, it is finding a taker. Pasta stays.
Total lack of intensity against an
Unemotional Ranger team. Yea, time to move in another direction Donny
Not to pick on Don the God father, but he wants to increase the number of teams that make the playoffs, but after watching those two teams last night I suggest have less teams make the playoffs.

Pastrnak is skewing the shot numbers. He’s led the league for most of the year.

He and Marchand are the only 2 Bruins in the Top 100 in shots.
I was having a back and forth with another poster yesterday, about Whalstrom, and one of my points in favor of him the lineup is that he actually shoots the puck. Last night he was nowhere to be seen, criticize him if you want but don't whine about the lack of shots at the same time, and I am not intending to rip you Rocco.

There comes a time when you have to stop blaming the coaches, well I agree changes need to be made, but it all needs to start with Sweeney. It will be 4 coaches in 4 years, not if, but when he replaces Sacco, how much longer will they let this guy continue to pass the buck ?

Another horrible penalty by Marchand. 6'5" Carlo probably had to change his shorts after that cough up (This is the reason the stink in the playoffs. no physicality and unwilling to take a hit).
It was good to see the professor though. He wore his "I'm smart" glasses too.
I have been ripping Marchand, for selfish stupid penalties but last night was not one of them.,

Reading through this thread and hoping the front office is as frustrated and mad as this Board

When you rank near the bottom of the league in both power play and penalty kill you can almost always expect to miss the playoffs. Add an offense in the bottom-third and the solution is much more than any one change.

After last night I am - sadly -in the sell category .....Frederick has to go before he walks as a UFA, Carlo is playing like he is in a fog- assuming he isn't suffering concussion symptoms he could bring back a decent return. Coyle is also a useful chip. Brazeau on his own won't bring much but might be a deal sweetener. And the conversation with Marchand regarding what he wants to do is now overdue.

The theme- right now the Bs have way too many guys who don't bring passion and jam. I went through the roster and the number of hard to play against players might get to five- the rest play a passive, paint-by- numbers game. It's a product that is hard to watch - which made me laugh when the first season ticket holder renewal email came yesterday- lots of process information but interestingly- nothing on prices.

And finally-please take a broom to the coaching staff....clearly Sacco is in over his head and not the answer. But like the players- the problem goes deeper- the special teams are a mess, the D often looks confused and the forwards play a dump and curl back offense.

Just not a pretty picture

I didn't realize they played last night....

That's sad....
I watched and did not realize they were playing last night.

Just imagine if the Bruins had an average power play this season.

They'd be in a safe playoff position right now.
We can piss and moan about the power play, but if you keep putting the same parts out there who's fault is that.

They are easy to play against has 47 thrown a hit since he signed an extension?

I can deal with a bad team and lack of skill, going through the motions is frustrating

Led the team in hits last night with 4. Played under 8 minutes.

Leads the team in hits for the season with 181. And he's missed 9 games.

And that's the guy you want to single out?

Such a difference from the night before. Most of the team looked tired. Had no idea their record was best in the NHL on back-to-backs (at least before last nights game).

When the already thin foreward lineup is off in terms of effort, the defense resorts to doing the same thing every. single. Time. Chuck it up the wall and hope it a. Gets out of the zone and b. Doesn’t have enough steam to make it to the other end of for icing . Which usually it does. I feel like I saw like two actual plays out of the defensive zone all night long and they both came in the first period. Just all around an uninspiring effort.

I won’t lie, I genuinely like watching this team battle their way to wins when they’re on. They have beat superior teams repeatedly this year just by working hard (at least since Sacco took over). But good Lord, when they’re only playing at 70% or so as a team, they look damn hopeless. The 3-2 final in that game is deceiving. Rangers had more energy from start to finish.

These two teams are fighting for the same playoff spot. One wins the game, retains that game in hand and moves 2 points closer to taking it. Yikes.

Yet neither team came out with any urgency at all.

But I love Brad! There are MANY games the Bs would have lost if it were not for Brad. He is not the bad guy.

On the ice, many times he has been the bad guy.
