GDT: GAME 55 - Tuesday, February 4th, 2025 - Winnipeg Jets vs. Carolina Hurricanes - 7:00pm CST -TSN3 - CJOB/Power 97

Told off and/or flipped off (depending on who you ask) a young fan asking for an autograph after the game. News reporter witnessed it and reported it in the paper the following day. Berthiaume denied it, but was forced by management to publicly apologize when the story was corroborated by a few others. The apology was seen as half-assed and insincere, and he was traded a few weeks later.

That’s my recollection of the story.
Kinda ringing a bell now, thanks

I haven't been to a Jets game this year and have gone through the schedule to see if one game stood out above the rest. Yesterday, I turned fifty-five years old and noticed that today's Jets game against the Carolina Hurricanes is the 55th of the season. Then I looked in my closet and pulled out my Mark Scheifele jersey. Coincidence? Perhaps, but I think it was telling me this was the game to go see...

I've been a Jets fan ever since I was a little kid growing up in the shadow of the Winnipeg Arena. I remember my father used to bring home cardstock from his workplace that I would use to make things. I remember making a Jofa helmet, complete with a chin strap, just like the ones Anders Hedberg and Ulf Nilsson wore in the WHA. I had my mini Jets stick and I would fly around the house scoring imaginary goals against the opposing teams...

I remember my father took me to see a game against the Birmingham Bulls one night. It was quite a blowout and afterwards he took me downstairs to see my heroes after the game. When it came time to meet them, I got scared and asked to go home. To this day, I regret not being able to meet Bobby Hull, Anders Hedberg, and Ulf Nilsson, that certainly would have been an awesome memory...

I never did go to any of the Avco Cup parades, as I was a good kid and would never “skip” school. One of my friends did, and said it was awesome! That certainly would have been a great experience...

As stated earlier in a previous GDT, my father took me to my first NHL Jets game and I spent my time watching the antics of the Chicken Delight Chicken as my sister's boyfriend, at the time, was dressed in it. My dad was so mad at me as he got the tickets for me to watch the game and not some stupid chicken...

My friends and I used to get free tickets from school to see the Winnipeg Warriors play, since we lived so close, it was always fun to go (even though they were awful). I remember one game, I noticed a lineup forming behind the net with kids getting autographs from someone, so I ventured over there. It turned out to be Dale Hawerchuk and he was kindly signing autographs one by one, and I had my game program signed by him. By the time I got back to my friends to tell them who it was, he had left, so they were out of luck...

My parents loved going to garage sales, and I usually tagged along. One sale stood out as it was at Dale Hawerchuk's house the day he got traded. He wasn't outside when we were looking over his stuff, but when we went to the car, he popped out and I waved to him as we were driving away, but I don't think he saw me...

I remember going to Grant Park High School for a sports card show and two Jets were in attendance to sign autographs, Daniel “The Bandit” Berthiume and Tom Draper. I waited in line and when I asked for Berthiume's autograph, we was too busy playing “kissy kissy” with his girlfriend and pointed to a pile of pictures he had already signed. Real nice guy, eh? Anyway, Tom Draper was super nice and answered all of the questions that I asked and signed one of the cards that I had...

I also went to a signing at the old Marshall-Wells warehouse at the corner of Ellice and Empress. I remember waiting in line to get some of the Jets autographs, when it was my turn to get Phil Housley's autograph, as he had just been traded to Winnipeg. I gave him my card and he said he didn't sign Buffalo Sabres cards. I told him that he did not have any Winnipeg Jets cards yet, but Housley wouldn't sign my card. Finally, one of the other Jets told him, “Just sign the card for the kid already, Phil”. He bowed his head like he was defeated and reluctantly signed my card. I can't remember who it was (I am thinking Randy Carlyle) but I never cared for Phil Housley after that...

As an adult, I went to quite a few Jets 1.0 games, usually getting the University half price tickets after 4:00pm. I remember one game I stayed after to get some autographs and John Paddock tried to sign my cards with the pen I had. “You need to buy a sharpie, kid,” he said, “this pen is no good.” He was right, though, the pen was no good and all I have to show for it is and indentation on the card where he tried to sign...

I went to the final goodbye for the Jets at the arena. It was a very sad occasion, and I cried. I stopped watching NHL hockey after that and just wasn't interested in it at all. It was like a piece of me was missing and i just couldn't replace it with anything...

When it was announced that Mark Chipman had purchased the Atlanta Thrashers and was moving the team to Winnipeg. it was probably one of the most exhilarating days of my life. I could not believe that we were getting a team back! After work I headed to The Forks, but by then, the crowd had dissipated so I missed out on all the excitement...

I got my ticket to the draft party that year, and it was nice to see so many people in Jets jerseys show up. We still didn't know what the team was going to be called, but that didn't stop us from wishing. I remember when it was our turn to pick, everyone was chanting “Couturier” and then they announced the team name and everyone cheered, and then they announced we had selected Mark Scheifele, and everyone gasped “Who?” No one knew who that kid was and we all thought it was a mistake. Well, it turned out this Scheifele character wasn't half bad after all...

I was able to get a ticket to see the team in the first season, against the Carolina Hurricanes. It was a very good game, the Jets lead 4-0 before the 'Canes got two in the third. All I can remember is how loud it was in the arena, it was quite the experience, from start to finish, the noise was deafening! Subsequent games that I have been to have not had that feel, but then I haven't been to a playoff game, yet...

Let's hope the Jets come out like gangbusters and beat the Hurricanes tonight...

Go Jets Go! :hockey:
55 you don’t look a day over 53
Great post
Thanks ❤️

If it makes you feels any better we can not stand Trudeau either
Speak for yourself, Puck- I thought political commentary was not allowed here. (This is what I've been warned) - I CAN stand Trudeau, and I admire that he doesn't cower to the "orange one" like PeePee would. Mods, please delete his post and mine. Thanks. Enough with this shit already.

I'm more irritated by the intrusion of politics into a game day thread. Misleading and false BS in the noted post notwithstanding.

I can't open a website, watch a Youtube video, change the channel, or turn on the radio without hearing about politics. Can't we agree to set aside politics in this one little corner of the internet that's hasn't been infected by that topic of discussion?

Anyway, back on point. I remember getting nosebleed balcony Jets tickets a the U of W student kiosk for something like ten bucks. But I also remember paying $50 for game six against Detroit that last playoff season. I had lined up the day before to get a wristband so I was one of the first 30 people in line. Those $50 playoff tickets were on the glass, close to center ice.

It's all relative.

I wasn't the one who called you tinfoil anything (but i did make a joke about making a hat out of a burrito wrapper). I made an appeal for people to act classy and take the high road, though

Anyway, I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish talking about these things on a hockey forum. I hope your rants lead to some kind of desired outcome for you, although I have no idea what that might be or how it might be achieved

If I'm going to argue with anyone on here, it will be about advanced stats, goddamn it!
i’m defending people’s right to boo at hockey games and letting those who do know that
1. they have allies on this board,
2. saying “it’s not classy” is a cliche best left to a time when the USA isn’t threatening to annex our nation and steal our resources.

that was it.

hardly an insane rant.

i even provide verified reputable sources…

problem is any answer that isn’t…”I agree with you” becomes “tinfoil hat” “rant”

no matter how factual the counter argument is.

You may have the best points in the world, but keep them off a goddamn hockey forum

I'm surprised that MODs allow this but no titties!

this isn’t politics.

politics is red blue my guy /your guy

this is a foreign nation has threatened Canada.

there were no shortage of “support Ukraine “ posts… did those spoil your day too?

and i didn’t bring it up i countered a comment that brought up booing anthems at hockey games….

Did I hit a nerve?
no just showed how weak minded who people can’t come up with arguments use phrases like “take your meds”

because they don’t read enough to actually offer anything to the conversation.

At the very least take any posts that aren't directly related to hockey (like booing an anthem, which is actually on topic) to the OT thread

Yes, the Ukraine stuff pisses me off too. Geopolitics is a huge and nuanced topic, that can't possibly be discussed adequately on a hockey forum (nor should the attempt be made)

"They are sweeping up "non-white people" indiscriminately and deporting them...Indigenous, american citizens. naturalized citizens born in thier own nation.. because "they don't look American" for deportation (or any other reason)"

I'll pick one point in the above mess as being representative. The Americans are not 'sweeping up Indigenous Americans" - for looking 'non-American' or any other reason. And that's not what's being said in any of the articles

Did you really think no one would read the articles you linked?

By the way you're being strangely silent on the deportation of the drug dealers, killers, and other violent offenders that are being deported...

not talking about geopolitics.

so it’s ok to say “don’t boo it’s not classy”…
but saying “yes boo” is bad?

because you aren’t attacking any of the “don’t boo” people for bringing politics into the discussion

The duece. Don’t add politics to our precious hockey thread too.

Just let it go. He’s clearly very young.

It’s skidooboy and not skidooman for a reason.

I admire how much you care and you’re enthusiasm and patriotism for Canada.

Instead of yelling on the internet, you seem like someone that truly wants to make a difference in defending our nation from trump.

Sure, booing the anthem will definitely prevent that - but you’ll need to boo maybe 1 or 2 hundred games before the US retreats. That’s like 3 years.

Theres a better way skidooboy:

You’re welcome.

I suppose, but I can't stand feeling like normalcy is being bullied into silence. Democracy dies in darkness, and democracy is worth defending.

That said, your point is well taken. I'm done with the discussion. Back to the Jets game:

The Jets are actually underdogs tonight! They're paying 2.33: for the win and 3.70:1 on a 1.5 goal spread. I threw $50 on the win and $20 on the spread. Bodog's also paying 5.6:1 on a 2.5 goal spread. Just threw $15 on that.

Here's hoping!

The best thing the production team could do tonight is cold mic the Canadian anthem singer and in doing so encourage the crowd to sing the anthem.

Much classier than booing the US anthem while reinforcing that Canada stands united against Trumps tariffs.

Regardless of you political affiliation all 3 national leaders have been outspoken against the tariffs as has every provincial leader.

For once our country stands united. Let’s hear your singing voices tonight Winnipeg!

Go jets go!!!

Apparently odds were even until Comrie was announced. Makes sense.

The boys will prove them wrong! Unless all the booing gets in KFCs head. Kidding!!!!
