I agree I wouldn't miss it much, but I do think fighting has some role in the league, just like pitchers plunking a guy at this next at bat after he gloats over a home run.

If fighting has an analogous role to plunking a showboat, then maybe the staged goon fight relates to throwing at a batter's head? It may seem to be the same type of response, but one is within the context of the game and the other is unnecessary, dangerous, and disrupts the flow of play? Just a thought.
