GDT: GAME 51 | Capitals @ Senators | In Honor of Shawn Edition | Thu Jan 30 2025, 7PM | TSN2, RDS5

You’re probably right he was critized a lot as a young player for not being in shape. But his creative game seems to be gone - he plays like Kyle Turris without the shot, zone entries and then everybting along the boards.

I love Batherson but I’m concerned. To me, him and Gaudette are the 2 Sens who haven’t managed to keep up with the increased intensity and pace of play
I agree about Batherson. He's been MIA for about a month. In the first half of the season, he was right there with Stutzle and Brady as our top offensive threats. Not sure what's going on with him.

Frankly, and no disrespect to DJ Smith who looks like a great guy but they finally seem to have professional NHL coaching. You could see already some bad habits being progressively fixed when Jacques Martin took over last season and now that enough time has passed with NO DJ DORION HOCKEY, they are finally in a better position to succeed.

Travis Green really has instilled a work ethic and commitment to defensive hockey which is resulting in wins. But he's also getting saves from his goalies which we didn't get last year. If DJ had gotten consistent saves, I bet we wouldn't have criticized him so much.

I was having the Foursberg blues there in the 3rd... but the lads pulled it out in OT.

Too bad the VGK couldn't get it done vs CBJ
The wings are not going away either .. EDM was up 2 -0 and lose 3-2

Batherson to me is the most underachieving Sne, team is winning regularly but he isn’t noticeable.

1 goal and 7 points in his last 21 games.amd nothing in the middle of the ice

I’d trade him for JT Miller
You're biting off your nose to spite your face. Even if he was playing to that level, he is still worth his contract. Set your expectations to third liner if it makes it easier to stomach his play because that is how he is paid

Our goalies have been better but some of the low save percentages are on our style of play in past years.

Our defensive coverage was really bad and our breakouts were a complete fire sale 90% of the time. It's extremely hard on a goalie when the opposing team just keeps getting the puck back. Hopefully DJ learned from his time here and his stint in LA, because he seems like a good person, but he was in way over his head as our head coach.

Well sure, but I’m not talking about cap hit versus Produciton I’m talking about production. If the solution is to pay Batherson $3 million more and he would produce 70 points I’d take it, but not an option.

Forsberg got caught cheating the pass on the first goal and wasn’t great overall. Perfect to get the win and have no doubts about starting Ullmark Saturday coming off a long absence.
Ya, I noticed that. It looked like he was anticipating a pass to a player on the far side of the net and left some space.

Glad Ullmark is back. Seems like he’s been out forever. It would be nice to get Jensen back as well.

Its going to be a battle with Tampa & CBJ. Senators are just 1 point ahead of TBL, but they have a game in hand.

Ya, the biggest difference this year is that the Senators have learned how to play team D. We didn’t have that last year or years past which makes a goalies job much tougher.

A little late on this but THAT WAS FOR SIMMER. f*** THAT CAPS AND f*** OVIE.

- That was the best game that I have seen Josh Norris play in his whole career. A monster on all 3 zones. Great speed, great stick, great hustle on the boards, and great finishing. He heard us bitches trying to trade him for soy boy Pettersson and took that shit personally.

- Pinto has been amazing recently, he needs more visits to NY to unlock his potential.

- Greig is finally figuring it out on the wing but would wish that he picks his spots a bit better, those late game penalties need to stop.

-Batherson needs to wake the f*** up. He is playing that DJ Smith -45 worst in the league type of hockey again.

- Brady, I am a little worried that he might be playing with some type of injury. He doesnt look like his dominant self on the boards anymore. Hes losing puck battles and positioning easily. He looks tired or hurt, he just looks flat out slow and lingering something.

-Zub is flat out amazing. There were instances where I thought he was gonna make a safe play here, but he showed patience and thought of a better play to break the puck out of the zone. Dude is so f***ing good,

-That Chychrun is a f***ing fraud, dude is the direct sole reason for like 3 shorthanded breakaways. I dont give a shit about his production (resulting from a high shooting %), dude is a sieve defensively and is a liability. Team aint going nowhere deep with that fraud putting in high minutes.

Batherson RW is second in scoring in Ott & if there is one thing this team needs is another good RW goal scorer/playmaker to eventually replace Giroux for their top 6.

chabot chasing his man to the top of the circle allowed McMichael to walk out from the corner. Never should have been able to walk out like that

The problem is Giroux was supposed to come down on the weak side to support the play there, he didn't which meant that Zub couldn't release and challenge McMichael. Chabot was doing his job on that play in a Diamond formation by pressuring the puck carrier, we do the same thing all the time, that's the system. Maybe he got a little further out than you'd like with the 5th man getting back on and in the play, but Giroux is supposed to be at the hashmark there and instead is at the top of the circle in no mans land

I agree with @JD1 on that one... he left a lot of space there. I saw the coach talking to Zub on the bench after that but he was left in a tough spot.
Ideally Zub could shift over and Giroux would drop down to cover the net front. That seems a lot harder to execute

Zub was hung out to dry because he was supposed to get support from Giroux. Giroux was 10 feet out of position, Chabot was challanging his man the way the play is designed, maybe a touch agressive, but the real breakdown was Giroux.

So we're not pegging production to cap hit anymore? The moment you detach the two is the moment you start mismanaging assets. For example, trading Drake because he isn't playing up to a $7-8M aav.
