This is a real gamble on the Canes part. Looks like they are going for broke this season, much like 2022-23 Bruins. Don't see why Rantanen would sign now. Does he love North Carolina? Are the Canes really going to pay $14 mil a year for him? Hall's also a UFA, as well as Orlov, Burns and Andersen.

Articles state he was given Carolina or Chicago after nixing a trade to the Canes last week.

So I think its more he does not like Chicago than likes Carolina.

So they are in today. That is tough for the Bruins. Necas can be a difference maker when fully committed. He is similar in style to Rantanen. I think the Avs did okay withe trade, not great but pretty well, considering Rantanen may well be a rental.

Now that’s how you do a trade if you are not sure about your playoff chances. Still get a player but also get some assets for the future. This is what Sweeney needs to do. Maybe not at that star level but don’t add to this team don’t say YOUR FAs are your rental either. Get something for these guys. Frederic and Brazeau would definitely fetch something. Nothing huge but better than nothing

Ya they only have one bad contract there with KK. They've always needed a legit take over a game offensive player, that is Rantanen now. Good move on their part IMO.
