GDT: Game 50: Pittsburgh Penguins @ Utah Hockey Club | 1/29/25 7:30 p.m. MST | TNT/Max

Why was Maccelli scratched? If AT is sending a message, he should have started a month or more ago. Maccelli isn't the only one not pulling their weight this year.

Man the lack of effort and energy is appalling
Just when I thought they had it figured out, they came out with a stinker last night. This team is so frustrating...when they play with energy and forecheck hard/win battles they can be so good.

Then you get games like last night where they seem to just try to over pass and make the pretty play through the neutral zone instead of getting pucks deep and battling for turnovers and establishing a strong forecheck. Inevitably that leads to bad turn overs in the neutral zone and D zone and chances against.

I don't understand why they seem to struggle so much with consistent effort game over game.

Consistency is one of the hardest part of the game, especially with young players. It can take time. Also, can you imagine being young, single and a millionaire?

Gotta wonder is it
1) lack of talent?
2) lack of effective coaching ?
3) both?
Lack of talent and young.

This is on BA

We have shown we have the talent to beat the best in the league (Jets) when the team plays with energy and a strong forecheck.

Sooo I put this on the coaching staff for not having the players ready or maybe not holding them accountable to how they should be playing. I also put it on the players for not showing up and playing the style that leads to wins in this league.

I like the team and I feel like we are greater than the sum of our parts (including with the injuries) when we play with energy and a strong forecheck. Unfortunately, we often slip back into bad habits of trying to thread passes through the neutral zone and playing too cute instead of getting pucks in deep, winning 50/50 battles, and fighting to get in front of the net for tips and rebounds.

My issue with consistency is it seems like the young guys aren't the issue. The issue tends to be the vets (Crouse/Bjugstad/Kerfoot/Carcone). I give Kerfoot a pass for the game against Pitt because he looked solid.

Doesn't mean the young guys have been consistent, but my issues with consistency continues to go back to the guys listed above this entire season who are supposed to be the model to show the young guys how to play.

They have a lot of in the slot passes and attempts because if they're connected, they lead to very high scoring chances. You are definitely right that they make the incorrect decision on going for that pass when an already rather close shooting opportunity is up and they do result in nothing sometimes. I think it's really a matter of players getting enough repetition of those opportunities in game situations where they learn when to pass and when to shoot and what they are actually capable of.

If you tell the players to stop going for those passes and play the safe way, there is a risk they never reach that high potential. I'm of the mind that Armstrong and ownership are quite pleased with Tourigny's work and he is being allowed to coach with an eye on developing our guys into high end talent rather than doing everything he can to eke out a win each night. I think it's why Cooley and Guenther have had substantial penalty kill time in their second seasons, why Cooley was benched for the remainder of that one game after a dumb penalty, and why they continue to make the extra pass that doesn't go through when a seemingly good shot is there.

With regards to the consistency of vets on other all around play I'll just say that it's a long season and guys have off nights or they may be playing with injuries that aren't bad enough to keep them out of the lineup. I don't doubt that the coaching staff are on these guys about it, but we're probably only going to have 1 healthy scratch role rotating around. Maccelli had it this last game and hopefully can come back after seeing whatever he's been missing on. Overall talent level isn't there to have some superstar win the game for us even while the rest of the team is off.

Also, one more thing. This team can compete with any team in the league now because it's talent has increased. They can't consistently maintain it, but it's miles better than previous seasons. They'll at least control play for substantial portions of games against any other team in the league.

I would add injuries, and also misconstructed roster.

Maybe this is where we should be? The Vegas points over/under was high 70s as I recall, so being a PPG team is about right.
