The colors that best represent the franchise are blue and gray which follow the civil war theme upon which the franchise was based. Frankly the blue and red mean absolutely nothing.

When we win, we jump over the Flyers into third place. Correct?

Oh, and look at the flag to the left.

Red pants in the civil war? A rarity.

I prefer our 3rds, they look better and its real history.

Edit: Oh and did Columbus actually produce Zouave outfits? Those weren't mass produced, they were a bohemian and orientalist fad that a few volunteer regiments took after. Whereas I thought Columbus mass produced the standard blue outfits.

I've never understood the connection between the Blue Jackets and the civil war. The northerners were called "Blue Coats", not jackets. Not to open a can of worms, but the whole naming of the team "Blue Jackets" was a mystery to me in that it had no connection with Columbus. I think the attempt to stretch history and connect the civil war with us was a little desperate on our part during our early dysfunctional years. By the way, has anyone ever heard what the short list of names were that Blue Jackets were picked from?

It was either Blue Jackets or Justice.

Mad Cows was a gag run by the "Other Paper". It was never seriously considered by the franchise owned by McConnell.

Blue Coats was a derogatory term used in the South. Not common usage up here on the side that won the war.

I don't really know the history of the naming.. I just remember there being a few different loose threads being tossed about...

Blue Jacket was a powerful Shawnee chief, Columbus made the blue outfits for the Union in the war, yellow jacket is kind of like blue jacket, so stinger? Personally I think since we squished the bug and went further towards the Union Jackets we have a more coherent identity, actually more so than most teams.

The colors of the state flag and the United States the civil war soldiers were fighting for mean nothing? Okay....

I've also never seen a maroon avalanche or a teal shark either. Sports team colors don't have to be literal interpretations of their nicknames in order to look good. The Blue Jackets colors have more meaning to their name than the two super bowl participants this year.

Besides in 95% of the previous 999 games they've worn blue and red. Tonight is about honoring the franchise's history which has existed in blue and red for over a decade. Blue and red have a lot of meaning. Frankly.

Does it really matter what a Blue Jacket is?

I have no idea what a Red Wing is and the origin of that name but nobody ever questions that because Detroit has tons of respect in the league as an original 6 team. All I know is that it is a wing with a wheel on it. That is far less identifiable than anything CBJ related but I always get asked what a blue jacket is when I visit other arenas. I can't imagine people ask Detroit fans what a red wing is when they visit.

There is a segment of the Jackets webpage that discusses the name issue. It explains that McConnell chose it as tribute to Ohio's performance in the Civil War.

Blue and Red was important to some, the New York Zouaves for one...

As for the CBJ colors I love the thirds, most fans in the league that I've spoken with about the subject like them too...

Big game tonight, it will be a playoff atmosphere... No predictions, just win Blue Jackets. The sixth seed in the Conference is at stake.

I like the name Blue Jackets when used in the civil war meme and i love the alt jerseys. I wished and still slightly do that we could have continued with the Columbus Chill.

Stoked for tonight's game. Going to get a pizza and a dr. pepper and live a bit large. Whoever said this was the most excited they've been for a game since playoff year... did you not watch the last game last year??

I watched the 1st game from the back row of the arena. Tonight I watch game 1,000 from glass seats. I plan on honoring the event with my throwback Ron Tugnutt replica complete with inaugural season patch.

In another 1000 games you'll be taking the first face off!

If I get time tomorrow I'll make a post regarding the naming of the team and how the Arena is not built on the old State Pen site.

Oh well... I'll be there Saturday though, hopefully watching the win streak keep growing. Its weird expecting wins in big games. I like it.

Include some stuff about originally being in the Eastern conference, at the time Toronto was in the West... I have a lot of memorabilia from the first days including nationwide blue flags and banners, orange buttons, Dispatch articles etc. All from rallies and stuff before the team was even named or Doug MacLean.. I look forward to your post...
