Post-Game Talk: GAME 51 - Bruins 3, Avalanche 1

For his height #51 lacks pure separation speed. He is young and can improve his skating but I think he is what he is speed wise. I can go either way on him as far as a trade chip. If packaged with maybe #11 they might bring in a top 6F from a WC DNQ Team but not someone 30+.
Poitras can work on his skating in time, but the problem is still going to be in one piece to get there, I watch him with 37-year-old Marchand and 33 year old Coyle, and that kid is gassed halfway through his shift. I know he will make that nice play on occasion that shows skill, but to me this kid will never be a top 6, if a package deal needs an additional piece to make a deal to make this team better, he should be that piece, while he still holds value in some eyes.

By all accounts the kid works his arse off. A great work ethic. This is true but it hasn’t translated in his skating (yet). He still lacks speed and his skating style is cringe. Still very young. Btw I had the same impression with Bergeron when he first entered the league. Who knows but if he helps improve a worthy trade I do it.

For the first time in probably a decade, I watched a game with my dad (when his grandson unexpectedly took a two-hour nap when Grandpa was visiting, I was glad the game was on) who couldn't stop commenting on how the Bruins didn't look good. Kept telling him "they're rarely going to look like the 'better' team against a team like Colorado, but this is how they will win games this year". They are a team built for playing hard and hanging around long enough to capitalize on their chances. Make the other team do the work and execute when you can. It's not going to be the most entertaining style, but with their lineup (especially now with injuries), it's what has the best odds of being effective in terms of winning. And it's what has been effective (when they don't shit the bed) since Sacco took over. Recognize what you are and play to that. The 24-25 Boston Bruins trying to out-finesse anyone will lose them 90% of their games.

People can be upset about the season all they want, but I think it's pretty much set in stone that IF they work their asses off every night, this is what they are. And I'm okay with that. As much as I want a team full of offensive superstars, there is entertainment to be had in a grinding team finding ways to win games. Sure, they may not have looked like the "better" team yesterday, but I would wholly disagree with the statement they didn't "deserve" to win that game.

He reminds me of Ondrej Kase in his skating style. It feels like he is just waiting to get crunched in the noggin all hunched over like that.

That's a great comparison. He's also a very similar build to Kase (actually, even a bit smaller).

Definitely a concern as he's trying to make it professionally. So many skilled guys get away with being smaller and more vulnerable at lower levels because they're just able to out-skill and outskate their competition. Certainly don't want to give up on the guy, but from my relatively limited viewing, I have to say that I am a bit disappointed that, while the vision is still there, the strength and power hasn't moved an inch to me eye which is where he needs to improve if he wants to stick as an NHL player. He doesn't have sthe option of settling into being a grinder given his size and style, so his path to consistent success does seem like a pretty steep incline.

He is so deceptive and unbelievably smart. He gets on the opposing D by reading the plays. Way more to this game than speed. Kid hasn’t gotten his feet wet as a pro. Can’t teach smarts.

He gets to where he needs to be. Skating style is at times over rated.

He took two heavy hits yesterday; his smarts can only bring him so far.
He’s played 53 games. I also worry about the hits.

Let's go 3-1-1 into the break...

There would only be 7 games before the trade deadline after that. Florida sends NINE players to the Tourney. They'll feel that.

By my count in the 12 games before the trade deadline, we face 5 playoff teams. Now is the time boys!

Starting March 1, they play 14 of their last 22 games on the road. 6 are against PO teams (Minn, Carolina. Vegas, LA. TB, NJ, and 3 more against Detroit, Montreal & Ottawa). They need to win their home games before the break.

The rest of the team has got to step up or this team is golf course bound

the Bruins have outscored opponents, 31-20 (+11), and outshot them, 226-182 (+44), during the 382:25 of ice time that Pastrnak has logged over the last 19 games.

When Pastrnak has not been on the ice over that same 19-game stretch, the Bruins have been outscored, 37-28 (-9), and outshot, 383-285 (-98). Woof.

Sounds like playing him 30 minutes a game is about right :sarcasm:

Not passing well is by far more important.

Not skating fast and not shooting hard not the same as not skating well and not shooting well.
I really think we have mediocre coaching/systems which lead to the crappy passing and breakouts. Not having our top 2 Defensemen also hurts the breakouts.

Lack of top 9 talent hurts as well. I've always been a Carlo supporter, but I think he could bring back a decent return at the trade deadline. He has some good numbers prior to this season. The question is would his extra 2 years add to or remove from his return?

Do you honestly think this lineup is any better than the stats you put out? I don’t.

Effort is hardly a guarantee at any level of any sport. But associating their struggles outside of the top gun(s) with not “stepping up” is misleading in my opinion. Their forward lineup is just really weak and a pretty solid defensive lineup has major injuries to key players. They’re not a top team just by default.

Bergeron entered at 18 in a hockey world where no kids had places. The 37 maturity was simply at another level. No comparaison on an IQ level IMO. At 20 years old, Bergeron had a 73 points year. I don't see any correlation.

Love Poitras, but I don't see the ceiling lots here see on him.

I was only referring to the Bergeron s skating when he first played for the bruins. It wasn’t the best.
