For the Boston Bruins, embarking on a four-game road trip so early in the NHL season has its benefits.

The team bonding might be great, but the results are even greater.

A night after defeating Los Angeles 4-2, the Bruins will go for a third straight victory in California -- and their fifth in a row to begin the season -- when they visit the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.

"A trip like this earlier in the year, I think it's important for us obviously to get that kind of chance to get to know each other a little bit better, especially for a guy like me new on the team," forward James van Riemsdyk said. "So that's been great."

Van Riemsdyk had netted the winning goal in Boston's previous two games before Saturday, when two of the Bruins' longtime offensive stars led the way in their 12th consecutive regular-season win dating back to last season.

Captain Brad Marchand and David Pastrnak each had three-point games, giving each points in every game this season. Marchand scored two goals for the first time this season.

Additionally, Morgan Geekie netted his first goal with the Bruins, and Derek Forbort dished out two assists.
The contribution of veterans and more unsung heroes alike was key to what coach Jim Montgomery described as a great team-wide effort that he had been looking for after a lackluster start to the trip.

"We played with a lot of emotion and we dug in," Montgomery said. "Everybody dug in in a lot of different ways, whether it was physicality, skill, effort or execution. ... We're starting to see our identity come out."

The Ducks have dropped consecutive one-goal games since earning their first win -- and the first in Greg Cronin's NHL head coaching career -- in last Sunday's home opener against Carolina.

With Sunday's game, Anaheim will conclude its second back-to-back in as many weekends to begin the regular season after taking a 2-1 loss at Arizona on Saturday.

The Ducks have played short-handed 22 times while being awarded only 12 power plays on the season. Frank Vatrano scored Anaheim's first man-up goal in the third period against Arizona.

"Fatigue will set in and then guys are sitting on the bench, the rhythm of the game gets pickled," Cronin said.

"Guys don't get on the ice and then the guys that are on the ice get tired. The effort (has) been there every game, (but) the execution gets sloppy."

Vatrano, who netted a hat trick in Anaheim's lone victory, is a Massachusetts native and former Bruins forward who knows that the team's results will turn with the right effort.

"We want to be hard to play against, and sometimes the calls don't go your way," Vatrano said. "But we're not going to change the way we play. I think we've just got to do it a little smarter."

Anaheim will be without defenseman Jamie Drysdale (lower-body injury) for a third straight game.

Ducks lost 2-1 in Arizona yesterday.
That concerns me

Anaheim is always the trap game with the Bruins in California and the Ducks have a lifetime winning record against the Bruins

I'd keep 63-18-88 together to start the game tonight.

Marchand - Zacha - Pastrnak
DeBrusk - Poitras - Geekie
JVR - Coyle - Frederic
Lucic - Beecher - Lauko

Or swap DeBrusk & Frederic (Basically opening night lines but Marchand & DeBrusk flipped)

Marchand - Zacha - Pastrnak
JVR - Cpyle - DeBrusk
Frederic - Poitras - Geekie
Lucic - Beecher - Lauko

IMO the first grouping is how it should shake out. I want to see lines 1 and 3 continue to build chemistry. So that leaves the personnel you listed for line 2. Which Potsy and Geekie seem to have chemistry so let’s see what a motivated JDB can do for them.

The Bruins Sunday night in Anaheim will see an old friend in Greg Cronin, the new Ducks coach who grew up in Arlington, and a future NHL superstar in Leo Carlsson, the 6-foot-3-inch Swedish center chosen second overall in the June draft.

Carlsson, injured late in training camp, finally made his debut Thursday night in a 3-2 loss to Dallas, and connected for his first NHL goal in 19 minutes of ice time. He looked every bit the big, smooth, franchise player he was touted as prior to the draft, when draftniks made style comparisons to Mats Sundin, Anze Kopitar, and Aleksander Barkov — cornerstone centers who also made their way to North America via top-tier European hockey.

“He’s kind of that type of player,” said Cronin, reached by telephone just a few hours ahead of Carlsson’s first shift. “He’s big, long reach, high IQ, responsible in all three zones. And he can skate, with this efficient stride where it doesn’t look like he’s going fast. But he’s fast, and he’s got that really high IQ on both sides of the puck, which is unusual for an 18-year-old.”

The Ducks are looking for a few good men after registering five consecutive postseason DNQs. They’ve found one in Carlsson, who could prove to be their centerpiece, and they also have another young sensational forward in Trevor Zegras (ex- of Boston University), along with Troy Terry and promising defenseman Jamie Drysdale.

Because of his size, reach, and game intelligence, Carlsson looks like the guy who could pull it all together for a franchise that hasn’t finished north of .500 since 2017-18.

“Certainly you can,” said a candid Cronin, asked if it were fair to view Carlsson through the “franchise” lens. “The early viewings have shown that he’s going to be a franchise player, but he hasn’t really played yet, so we’ll see what’s going to happen in the next couple of weeks.”

Cronin Sunday night for the first time as head coach in the NHL will face the franchise he grew up idolizing, first hooked as a kid watching Bobby Orr and the Big Bad Bruins, and then infatuated all the more with Don Cherry’s Lunchpail AC of the late ‘70s.

“Honestly, as a coach, I compartmentalize, just try to stay in the moment,” said Cronin, asked how seeing the Spoked-B from a different perspective will resonate. “So, really, I haven’t thought a lot about it.”

The topic, though, triggered Cronin’s memory of going to the Garden for the first time, his father taking him from Arlington to see Syl Apps and the expansion Penguins. The trip entailed an MBTA bus ride from Arlington to Lechmere (Cambridge), then a Green Line trolley that dropped off Garden goers at a platform high above Causeway Street, near the roofline of a Garden already into its fifth decade of NHL operation.

“I remember standing in the back row of the balcony, you know, with the iron rails, and looking down the steep stairs,” recalled Cronin. “And I remember thinking, ‘Man, if I fall, the first thing my face will hit is the ice!’ ”

And further to validate his hometown credentials, Cronin recalled finagling the UHF antenna to watch the Bruins on Channel 38, and broke into a quick rendition of the tune the station played every time the Bruins came on the air.

“Dah-dah-dah . . . dah-dah-dah-dah,” he chanted from his coach’s office, ice level at the Honda Center. “Crazy, isn’t it? Till now, like I say, I haven’t thought a lot about it, but, yeah, those are rich memories for me.”

The bigger deal for Cronin is the job at hand, getting familiar with the clay he’s been handed by general manager Pat Verbeek and shaping the Ducks into a team more like the one that won the franchise’s lone Stanley Cup in 2006-07.

The work is just under way for a kid who grew up playing the game on Spy Pond.

I had no problem staying up for that game last night. It wasn't boring at all!

Marchy was unreal....Bs are SO lucky to have him.

Somehow, I doubt it, but it was nice to see it didn't matter.
If he plays he should be ready to put a few on the board

Looking forward to the matchup today

Carlsson has been as good as advertised, we’ve been playing him with terry and zegras, the line has looked great, but snakebitten. Unfortunately that is also kinda putting all our offense in 1 line, tho the mctavish strome vatrano line has showed some chemistry.

Not sure what our defense will look like…. Drysdale has been out last 2 games.

Mintyukov has been amazing… maybe the best player for us so far this year… good defensively and dynamic offensively.

Lacombe has been a pleasant surprise…. And has even earned the nick name lindholm lite.

Luneau may be in… and while you can def see his talent… he still needs time in developments…. I assume once drysdale is back and 100% luneau will be back in jrs.

It’s a much diff team than the last 3 years with Cronin running the ship , we’re a lot faster, a lot more physical and a lot more competitive. Have had a tough starting schedule this season with matchups vs Vegas Carolina Dallas but Anaheim has been competitive vs everyone.

Both teams coming off games yesterday so should be another good measuring stick for us… good luck and nice to see you guys still the top dogs even without bergy and limited center depth.

Ps : still hoping we aim at adding debrusk

I was introduced to Cronin prior to the start of my sons HS game against Arlington HS
just over 20 years ago. He ended up coaching my sons HS linemate at NU.

Seems like a typical Ahlington kid, except he didn't look like Peter Noone like most of them did....ha!!!

Yeah that 4th goal was vintage 63-37-88 stuff.

I watch your highlights and you are definitely fast and physical. YOU have a good core with Terry, Zegras, Lunneau, Carlson etc Tricky game for the Bruins.
